The nativity scene at St. Susanna's Parish in Dedham, Mass., replaces the Holy Family with anti-ICE signs protesting U.S. immigration policies. The church pastor, Rev. Stephen Josoma, is ignoring a request from the Archdiocese of Boston to remove the signs.
"Yes, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were forced to flee their home and become refugees in Egypt to escape King Herod's persecution, meaning they were, in modern terms, immigrants and asylum seekers, a parallel often drawn in religious and social discussions about migration.
While they were Roman subjects moving within the empire, their flight fits the definition of seeking safety from violence and political threats, making them analogous to modern-day refugees and migrants."
