Defending the Disabled

L.A. County Public Defender Noah Cox noticed the disturbing trend. Many of his clients seemed to struggle answering even the most basic questions about the crimes they'd been charged with, questions like, "Where were you that day?" It seemed, Cox said, "like they were having troubles related to some sort of intellectual ability."

The problem with "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" is that the subjects are not adequately supervised or monitored after they are released. This guy walked through a parking lot randomly shooting into cars in 2022, fortunately only hurt one person. Because he was not competent to stand trial, he was diverted to outpatient mental health treatment, wherupon a doctor soon determined he was no threat to society and released him from further treatment.
