Not a good look when you were born in the 30s, were of German descent, and your middle name was Adolph. But it was a rather unfortunate family name that went back several generations. No wonder he went by Sonny. Anyway, that's my Dad talking. He was a big fan of his back in the 60s. RIP.

He played for 18 years, for Philly first, then Washington; from the time I was in elementary school playing in the Pop Warner league, thru jr high and high school in Irving, TX, home of that Division's rival Dallas Cowboys.

(for history buffs, I was a couple years behind Alan Lowry in high school)

And he was still playing when I was in college, among the last of the low paid, high and hard living NFL stars.

RIP

When and where I was a little kid, Y. A. Tittle was the local god. Then Namath and Tarkenton.

Cocky Joe and Fast Fran... Legends.

Namath was the Jets, Tarkenton was Minnesota. Where the ---- did you live?

Tarkenton was the NY Giants before Minnesota.

Me 'n' Lamplighter share a birthplace, and we both commuted off the island for high school. He was born earlier than me, so he had the ferry. I had the exhaust-filled city bus going over the bridge.
