The average American spent $42.38 per month on streaming-based subscriptions in 2024. That works out to just over $500 per year - or around $30,000 over a lifetime - but is actually less than the previous year by a significant margin.

The streaming services seem to be suffering the usual marketing vs accounting conundrum ...

Marketing: we need to keep the price low to attract more customers.

Accounting: We need to talk about profits for our shareholders.

So, now that it seem that marketing's ~streaming~ plan (I am reluctant to call it a strategy at this point) has garnered a major shift in viewing habits, the accounting departments of those streaming companies now seem to want to generate a profit.

The solution: raise prices!

We've cut and shared several services with family members lately. They keep adding commercials and trying to turn it back into basic cable. What was initially attractive is slowly going away so we have to find new and creative ways to avoid the stupid ads they want to shove in your face nonstop.

That seemed to be the business model for the streaming services as they initially tried to attract customers away from "linear" TV and towards streaming. Once those customers became streaming customers, the extraction of money from those streaming customers began.
