I don't see where POTUS derives the power to enact tariffs without accompanying legislation.

Accompanying legislation shouldn't be enough UNLESS the authority expired at the end of the legislative term. No congress should be able to transfer an authority granted to it in the constitution to the presidency if it required the president to agree to give it back.

Of course they're coming. However, I am encouraged by the actions of the judge that gave the Trump administration only a day to comply with his order to provide full SNAP benefits. By doing so, it put a stop to the delays that a feature of Trump's appeal process. Hopefully other judges will be as mindful of the Trump's delay tactics and how they corrupt the appeals process.

If SCOTUS comes away with the perception that its not a National Emergency, it will be bad for his credibility. Trump will become unbelievable and thought of as the "boy who cried wolf".

In a way, it will also be bad for the country because it needs the president to be able to act quickly and decisively when a true national emergency occurs.

Tax increases are more palatable and saleable when they are applied to a specific purpose. Unfortunately, what happens is, over time, the money gets diverted to other causes. Also, money that was previously applied is a "worthy cause" is reduced because there is a new funding source.

If the GOP Nukes the filibuster with 51 votes, why vote for a continuing CR? Why not just cancel a whole bunch of expenses that the Democrats wouldn't let us cancel before.

I suspect that one of the reasons senators don't want to eliminate the filibuster is they would have no place to hide! They would have to take tough votes that would alienate many of their constituents. Since senators are elected state wise, senators in "purple" states know that they will be at risk if they are forced to vote on every contentious measure coming before them. There would be a lot of intra party fighting to tweak bills to minimize their risks.

From my reading of the tea leaves, Roberts and Barrett will side with Kagan, Jackson and Sotomayor. Gorsuch may also be on board.

The right seeks to impose their will on others whereas the left says the constitution entitles each of us to live our lives the way we see fit as long as we aren't encroaching on the rights of others.

Trump will make some type of outrageous move just prior to the 2026 election so as to prevent dems from taking control of the HOR. He knows that if they do, impeachment is coming. And, that because of the private chatter about repub senator discontent, there a good chance that there will be enough repub senators to vote to convict so that they can finally rid themselves of the cancer that has affected their party.

Trump never took into consideration that his incompetent choices were eventually going to make him look bad.

There is an expiration date on the House passed bill of 11/27/2025. At that point, the House will have to reconvene to pass something to replace it. The shutdown will probably extend to that point. That way, both dems and repubs can save face that they didn't cave. Furthermore, NEGOTIATIONS for an end to the shutdown will have occurred by then with the reconvening of the House the first step in the resolution of the problem.

Repubs would have had to address the ACA premium hikes by the end of the year anyway. The dems have played it in such a way as to get credit for the resolution and painting the repubs as the villains that caused the premiums to escalate.
