Food for thought for those who say that Kamala's ancestor was a slave owner:

Did U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris' Ancestor Own Slaves in Jamaica?

Finally, it is worth noting that, even if it is true that the Harris family are descendants of the Antrim slave owner Hamilton Brown, they are also quite likely to be descendants of slaves. It is well-documented that British and Irish slave owners in the Caribbean (and their counterparts in the American colonies) routinely raped and engaged in illicit sex with female slaves, resulting in many "illegitimate" children of mixed racial heritage.

If it is the case, for example, that Christiana Brown was the daughter of Hamilton and Mary Melvina Brown, this means that two of Christiana's siblings were Mabel Melvina and Edwin Hamilton Brown, both of whom were listed in their baptismal records as "colored," that is of mixed race (as opposed to "black" or "white," the other labels used in baptismal records at that time).

This in turn would mean that Hamilton Brown, a man born on the island of Ireland in the late 18th century and a prominent and powerful slave owner, had racially mixed grandchildren, after fathering a daughter (Mary Melvina) with a woman whose name did not appear on the baptismal certificate. Although we don't have clear proof, that pattern strongly suggests that that particular branch of Brown's family tree derived just as much from an enslaved woman, whose identity may well be lost to history, as it did from Brown himself.

Bitcoin is to its devotees what the wafer is to Catholics--an article of faith. It also goes with a collection box. It is a safe bet that Donald Trump's recent conversion to bitcoin is motivated by the big donations that come with it. Which puts his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in a bind. Harris would like to protect retail investors from an asset class that often resembles a Ponzi scheme. But America has an army of crypto investors--roughly 40mn--that in a tight election cannot be disrespected.

America's bitcoin politics is both electoral and substantive. The voting piece is easiest to grasp. Many have questioned Trump's decision to select JD Vance, the Ohio senator, as his running mate. By conventional measures, Vance has been a disastrous pick. His approval ratings are underwater. His standing with most women voters is unsurprisingly low given his disdain for those who choose not to give birth, or are unable to.

But Vance is backed by some of America's wealthiest people. These include the Silicon Valley giants Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. Each of them is invested, both financially and philosophically, in cryptocurrency. While analysts pore over Vance's allegedly populist economics--his support for trust-busting, for example, and his blame of Wall Street for working-class America's woes--others are following the money. In his short Senate career, Vance has sponsored legislation to deregulate cryptocurrency. He calls Gensler "the worst person" to oversee the asset class.

FTA:

Vance has deep ties to the Heritage Foundation, and in particular to Kevin Roberts, who has been president of the right-wing think tank since 2021 and is the architect of Project 2025. Vance has praised Roberts for helping to turn the organization "into the de facto institutional home of Trumpism" and has endorsed elements of Project 2025. Vance is also the author of the foreword to Roberts's upcoming book, Dawn's Early Light, which The New Republic has obtained in full even though the book's publisher, HarperCollins's Broadside Books, has apparently tried to suppress it amid the scrutiny of Project 2025 and Vance's ties to Roberts.

The subtitle and cover of Roberts's book were softened as scrutiny of the Trump campaign's ties to Project 2025 grew. The book, which is scheduled to be published on September 24, was originally announced with the subtitle "Burning Down Washington to Save America" and featured a match on the center of its cover. The subtitle is now "Taking Back Washington to Save America," and the match is nowhere to be seen. Promotional language invoking conservatives on the "warpath" to "burn down ... institutions" like the FBI, the Department of Justice, and universities has also been removed or toned down, though it is still present in some sales pages.

But the inspiration for that extreme language can be found in Vance's foreword, which ends with a call for followers to "circle the wagons and load the muskets," and describes Roberts's ideas as an "essential weapon" in the "fights that lay [sic] ahead." (The New Republic downloaded Dawn's Early Light earlier this month from NetGalley, which provides advance copies of books to reviewers and booksellers. Copies were removed from the platform earlier this month.)

More racial segregation. I remember when the left viewed this as a bad thing.

This happened organically. The first night after Biden bowed out and Harris tossed her hat into the ring, black women who regularly "meet" on Sunday nights held a zoom call and a whole bunch of black women tuned in. Not to be outdone, black men decided to due a similar zoom call, and white women decided to follow suit. Other groups have followed like the White Dudes for Harris mentioned in this article. FWIW, the other night there was a Women for Harris zoom call that was open to women of all races and not all groups have a racial/ethnic compenent. For example, Dads for Kamala, Disabled Voters for Harris and Crazy Cat Ladies for Harris are among the other "groups" gathering online to raise money, awareness and lists of volunteers.

Black women, white dudes, crazy cat ladies: Identity groups fuel a groundswell for Harris

Within hours after President Biden announced he would not seek reelection and endorsed Harris as his replacement nominee, more than 44,000 Black women and allies from across the country gathered online, raising over $1.5 million, according to organizers. The template for that event, organized by Win With Black Women, was repeated the next day by Win With Black Men, which organizers said brought 45,000 Black men and raised $1.3 million. . . .

On Tuesday, Harris announced she would be headlining a "National Organizing Call" " open to all identities.
