Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is a normal guy. I say this as a former Republican representative who served with Tim in Congress. In these times of bitter political division, America needs someone who can calmly and humbly serve the nation without all the unnecessary shouting and bluster that too often defines our politics today.

Tim and I represented different political parties " he as a Democrat, and I as a Republican " yet we found common ground and worked together on numerous issues for the betterment of our constituents and our nation. More than ever, America just needs a normal guy to help lead our nation and bring us together. I'm excited Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Tim as her running mate.

Being from PA and knowing that PA is a must win for Harris, I was hoping for Shapiro to be VP. But he is only 51 and has plenty of time to run in the future. I sincerely hope he can convince enough Pennsylvanians to vote for Harris/Walz come November.

Free tampons for high school girls isn't just a nicety, it's a blessing in that it will save a lot of teenage girls from anxiety and/of embarrassment while they are in the classroom.

Walz had it right about them: "These guys are just weird...they're running for He-Man Woman Haters Club or something...that's what they go at. That's not what people are interested in."

I knew little about Walz but the more I get to know him/learn about him, the more I like him. He reinforces a major theme of her/now their campaign: "It's about our freedoms, stupid." Good line I read about him: "He is who JD Vance pretends to be." He is pro-worker, pro-family, pro-woman. Lke Kamala, he's a happy warrior. And, yes, he's right: they are weird.

As I've reported in the weeks since the horrific shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, top Trump allies repeatedly have promoted unfounded conspiracy theories and blamed Trump's political opponents without evidence. Multiple threat assessment and law enforcement leaders have told me that this rhetoric is fueling already heightened concerns about political violence heading into the November election. Those concerns, they said, stem foremost from domestic far-right extremist groups and Trump's MAGA movement.

As I've reported in The Washington Spectator previously, any default on US debt would be unprecedented, sparking a global catastrophe with unpredictable outcomes. How soon we forget " in 2021 Moody's estimated that default could mean the loss of at least 6 million jobs and the destruction of $15 trillion in wealth. (The COVID bailout packages amounted to about $4 trillion, by comparison.)

We got lucky in 2021, when Congress passed a $2.5 trillion increase right before the Christmas break. That kicked the can down the road to January 19, 2023, when we hit the limit once again. Janet Yellen enacted "extraordinary measures" to stretch available cash until June 5; House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden struck a deal which was passed just days before default, or "X-Date."

That deal (which really only registered with political and finance nerds) bought us until January 2025. If sane people are elected to Congress and the Presidency, that shouldn't be a problem: just sort out some kind of deal, pass it, and live to fight another day. But these are not sane times. It's wise to plan for the worst, which unfortunately is quite a plausible eventuality.

But one part of Trump's remarks stuck out.

Trump thanked three of the Georgia State Election Board's members specifically for their efforts to change Georgia's certification rules.

This is odd. Trump doesn't usually concern himself with details this in-the-weeds.
