While it is of DEEP concern that the military was sent in over the objections of California officials, there were definitely reports of violence that came from sources other than right-wing sites.

'Our officers are really under attack,' LAPD chief says

During a press conference on Sunday, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell decried the escalation of violence in Los Angeles as "disgusting" as Molotov cocktails, fireworks, rocks and more were used to target officers.

"It's escalated now since the beginning of this incident," McDonnell said, calling the protests "increasingly worse and more violent."

"Tonight we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you," McDonnell said.

The police chief said implementing a curfew was discussed with the L.A. County Sheriff and that officials will reassess if necessary.

Then PBS ran a story fact checking videos...

From www.pbs.org

Amid legitimate images showing people in Los Angeles waving Mexican flags, vandalizing self-driving cars and pelting rocks at California Highway Patrol vehicles, other videos populating social media news feeds are not what they claim to be.

One video shared June 8 showed a police car engulfed in flames. But the video dates to 2020, when people rallied against police brutality after the May 25, 2020, murder of George Floyd, a Black man, while in police custody.

Another video, shared June 8, showed a row of military vehicles driving down a street. Some users said the video is evidence that "Marines have arrived in Los Angeles!" But the video was from June 4, before the protests began, and it shows military service members reuniting with their families at Camp Pendleton, about 100 miles south of Los Angeles.

@84

Off topic... per capita, Alaska has more rape cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 118.4. Texas is #13 at 49.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Still fairly high up, as it is in the top half, but far from being at the top. Btw, New Jersey had the fewest rape cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 17.9.

Anyways, sorry off topic, but seeing #84 above I was curious and looked it up and I was just surprised that Alaska was at the top of the list... Not that Donnerboy was incorrect, just a difference between total numbers versus per capita.

@10 Danforth,

Then add in the new deductions and even more tax free income is possible, right? Specifically tips are tax free and the first $12,500 of overtimes is tax free, if I'm not mistaken. ($25k of overtime if married, filing jointly.) I think both of these start to phase out at $150,000 incomes ($300k if married, filing jointly.)

Found this at www.cbiz.com although I think it's before the bill went to the House.

Anyways, maybe Danforth, you can run some numbers using that info too? (And thanks for the complement about nice analysis....I often don't know what I am doing, but sometimes I do...lol...)

NY Times reporting ceasefire agreement...

Qatar Intervened to Persuade Iran to Accept Cease-Fire Deal, Diplomats Say www.nytimes.com

The BBC reports:

Iran's foreign minister says if Israel stops its attacks, Iran has "no intention to continue our response" www.bbc.com

#15 Something else that is....interesting...

According to NBC:

As Iran comes under attack, its Arab neighbors are largely AWOL
The American strikes are likely to be accepted " and even privately praised " by a Middle East officialdom that has long seen Iran as the primary threat to regional stability.

www.nbcnews.com

The article says that many Arab nations may publicly criticize the bombing of Iran but privately praise it because of a "cold war" between many Arab countries and Iran...

Caught me of guard that is for sure! If it were from FOX I'd definitely doubt it...but NBC?

Qatari Prime Minister Secured Iran's Agreement to US Ceasefire Proposal After Call With Trump, Official Says www.usnews.com

It's difficult to find articles outside of this one that Iran has agreed to the ceasefire. So who knows...

From www.us-iran.org

In fact, sex-reassignment surgery is not only legal in Iran, but Tehran is considered to be an international hub for obtaining it. The procedure has been allowed since Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini learned of the hardships of a trans woman and issued a religious decree to legalize it in the mid-1980s. Since then legal gender recognition has been possible, and those individuals who undergo gender confirmation surgery are accepted in the eyes of the law.

[Yet, at the same time...]

Despite criticism from other nations and human rights organizations, the Islamic Republic of Iran has maintained its practice of condemning same-sex relations as illegal and morally corrupt. As a result, homosexual individuals in Iran face legal challenges and consequences distinct from heterosexual and cisgender people. The Iranian Penal Code prohibits all sexual activity outside of the institution of marriage, same-sex relations, and LGBT-related media, with the DEATH PENALTY being one form of punishment for homosexuality.

From www.en-hrana.org

Iran has a gender binary legal framework and the law mandates that individuals select either male or female and undergo corresponding gender-confirming surgeries for legal recognition. The mandated surgeries are physically demanding, carry significant medical risks, and entail high financial costs that many cannot afford. Requiring these surgeries as a condition for legal recognition imposes an unjust burden on transgender individuals, making their right to identity contingent upon their willingness and ability to undergo medical procedures. Moreover, those who refuse or are unable to choose a binary gender and undergo the prescribed surgeries face severe consequences. They are often denied access to basic services and rights, such as employment and education. This denial extends to various aspects of public life, effectively marginalizing them and limiting their ability to participate fully and freely in society.
