Yes, Nulli, it's climate change/global warming. The problem is that mo one will do anything about it because it would bring about a second industrial revolution. Earth w/o carbon emissions, plastics, toxins in the oceans, etc. What will we do about nuclear waste? Bury it? What about leakage hitting the water tables? Hell, I can watch Nat Geo all day and see the damage done to entire ecologies.
We are screwed.
Ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? It was the book that made Teddy Roosevelt ban sausage from the White House. One of the facts that made him throw out his plate of sausages out the window was that if a worker fell into a huge vat used to mix all the ingredients, it was not stopped. The worker became part of that batch of sausage mix. Teddy couldn't do anything about it because there would be an outcry from people wanting their breakfast meat and people losing their jobs. Today, pork bellies is a commodity traded on Wall Street.
Most people don't want to disrupt the status quo. Imagine NASCAR races driven in electric cars.
Programs eliminating those things that cause climate change / global warming will fail. Industry is so ingrained in our lives that eliminating it would be political suicide. Remember the outcome of Prohibition? What about outlawing tobacco? We know it's bad; we'll never get rid of smokes. Bring on the cancer! It's my human right!
We're a world of slow self destruction.
