At least one person was killed and 14 others injured in a shooting at a Kroger in Collierville, Tennessee, police officials said Thursday afternoon. The shooter was also found dead, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Police Chief Dale Lane said. Lane said at a news conference that 12 victims were injured, but town spokesperson Jennifer Casey later updated the total to 14.

Bannon Admits He Advised Trump To Plan Reckoning' On Jan. 6 That Would Kill Biden Presidency In The Crib'

...With glee, former Trump campaign chairman Steve Bannon confirmed on Wednesday that he helped former President Trump plan the Jan. 6 insurrection as part of an effort to "kill the Biden presidency in the crib."

The Trump adviser made the comments on a Wednesday episode of his War Room: Pandemic, confirming reporting in Bob Woodward and Robert Costa's book Peril.

Bannon played a clip on his podcast of the two Washington Post reporters discussing the book on MSNBC, in which Costa said that in the days leading up to the insurrection, Bannon "privately told President Trump to have a reckoning on January 6th."

"And he said to the president, it's time to kill the Biden presidency in the crib," Costa added.

Bannon then cut the clip, and said on the podcast: "Yeah, because it's about legitimacy."

"Let's look at the Economist poll, not Revolver, not The War Room " 42 percent of the American people think that Biden did not win the presidency legitimately," he added.

Bannon's view, garbled through his own puffery and bizarre manner of speaking, also appears to confirm the book's reporting that he told Trump that the day should be a "reckoning." Unsurprisingly, Bannon's remarks manage to both posit the insurrection as a legitimate revolt while also placing himself at the center of events.

It's another piece of evidence that further ties Trump to violence at the Capitol, which occurred as Trump gave a rally repeating the Big Lie and telling his audience to go "fight" as members of Congress formalized Biden's win....

...According to court documents, Neefe and Smith communicated with each other and others on Facebook in the weeks preceding Jan. 6. For example, on Nov. 4, 2020, a day after Election Day, Neefe wrote to Smith, "Im getting ready to storm D.C." The two subsequently shared their intentions and plans to travel to Washington on Jan. 6. In one such communication, Neefe wrote, "We goin? ...Cause hot damn son I really wanna crack some commie skulls."

The two discussed bringing "batons" with them, and Smith messaged another Facebook user that he had obtained a military-style knife that he planned to bring to Washington. On Jan. 5, Smith commented on another Facebook user's post, "Sacrifice the Senate!!!!!"

According to the documents, Smith continued to send Facebook communications on Jan. 6, including a video recorded after he and Neefe entered Capitol grounds in which he declared, "We stormed the gates of the Capitol." While on the grounds, Neefe carried a wooden club and participated in hoisting and pushing a large metal sign frame into a defensive line of Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers attempting to prevent the crowd from further advancing on the west front plaza of the Capitol.

In a Facebook message sent after the breach, Neefe stated, "If i [sic] had it my way every cop who hurled a baton or maced on [sic] of us would be lined up and put down." In messages Smith sent on Facebook after the breach, he stated "we literally chased them into hiding. No certification lol." As alleged, Neefe entered the Capitol building, including the Rotunda, where he disregarded commands from law enforcement officers to leave....

Op-Ed: Biden-France spat over sub deal gone bad isn't as simple as the French make it out to be

...It's wrong to say that the U.S. betrayed France, when France failed to deliver....

However, it is wrong for French officials to blame the United States for a betrayal because Washington furnished Australia with an alternate submarine sale option and to insinuate that the U.S. bears all responsibility for the French contract's demise. In fact, the program was poorly conceived, with both France's Naval Group and Australia's government failing to accurately calculate the costs and delays in their particularly unwieldy undertaking. Without the American option, Canberra may well have sought a cheaper deal for submarines with Germany or Japan.

Over the five years that Australia was engaged in buying the submarines from France, going so far as to sign a contract for purchasing them, the estimated total procurement cost had roughly doubled from $32-$36 billion to $65 billion, while the project suffered lengthy delays from relatively early on....

As delays and costs increased, the Naval Group submarine deal was becoming the worst of both worlds: It was more expensive than nuclear-powered submarines while lacking their premium capabilities, as well as the promising new technologies for non-nuclear submarines. And, despite lacking major new innovations, the first submarines would only enter service in 2034....

Idaho COVID crisis: Hospitals overflowing with sicker, younger patients

...Health officials in Idaho are reporting dire circumstances as hospitals around the state continue to crumble under the delta-fueled surge of COVID-19 cases.

"We continue to set record highs," Dave Jeppesen, director of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, said in a press briefing Tuesday. With the latest data through September 18, the state saw a new record high of 686 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, a record high of 180 COVID-19 patients in intensive care units, and a record high of 112 COVID-19 patients on ventilators. The number of ventilated COVID-19 patients is nearly double what was seen in the last surge of COVID-19 cases in December.

"These numbers continue to increase, and we expect them to continue to increase," Jeppesen added....

As for the patients themselves, they're skewing younger and sicker than those seen in the previous surge, Souza said. Of 51 COVID-19 patients in system's ICUs, 36 are under the age of 55 and 13 are under the age of 40. The hospital system is also using more invasive treatments than before. Souza attributed this to the younger ages of the patients, who are attempting to use every method possible to try to survive their infections. "If we're honest about it, 40-year-olds have not contemplated death before," he said.

The system is also seeing more complications for severe COVID-19 infections, including clotting disorders and kidney damage. The average length of stay in the ICU has also increased from about six days to eight. Souza estimated that 30 percent of patients will have long-term recoveries.

Patients are also dying more. In previous surges, the mortality rate among COVID-19 patients in the ICU was about 28 percent, Souza said. But in the current surge, it's 43 percent. ...

Mormon church to require masks in temples amid COVID surge

...The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Wednesday that masks will be required inside temples to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Church leaders said in a statement that masks will be required temporarily in an effort to keep temples open. The message was the latest in a series of statements from church leaders encouraging masking and vaccination efforts against COVID-19.

"As cases of COVID-19 increase in many areas, we want to do everything possible to allow temples to remain open," the church said in a statement. "Therefore, effective immediately, all temple patrons and workers are asked to wear face masks at all times while in the temple."

In Utah, where the church is based, a summer surge of the virus among unvaccinated residents has continued to grow while vaccination rates have slightly increased....
