While true, these comments about what's the real and true Christianity are a bit too much like arguing the USSR wasn't real Communism. Is Evangelical Christianity mostly an abomination of the teachings of Jesus? Yes! A thousand times yes, but it doesn't matter. It's a big part of what Christianity is, in American life, and especially American politics.

Maybe because I don't call myself one, I don't personally feel slighted that these fascists have embraced it. But that's what they did all the way back in Rome or at least the Holy Roman Empire; not sure where Corky would draw the line. That's part of what Christianity is. And this Pope trying to undo some of that damage is, too.
