It was noticeable because our host would have to break the comments into 2 segments, Comments 1-1,000 and Comments 1,001-onward. Threads with 200, 300, 400, or more comments in each tread was not unusual. Heck, logging in first thing in the morning might reveal an overnight "discussion" of dozens, sometimes 100 or more comments in a single, hot thread.

#31 In more than four decades of posting on BBSs, AOL, the Retort and other venues, primarily political venues, I have never once seen an epiphany from someone I was communicating with announcing, "A_Friend, you are right and I was wrong! I've changed my position!"

I used to subscribe to that noble "If one tries to change opinions," especially with the addition of "the opinions of other readers," but the reality is that's just pyrite and not the real thing.

The reality is that a venue like this is a venting arena, and not much more.

You might feel good about making a strong point, and maybe, just maybe, someone will mark it "Newsworthy." Or maybe someone here will respond back to you.

But do not kid yourself into thinking that this is, as I said earlier, a kind of Algonquin Round Table, where noble and sane ideas will be exchanged and met with respect, consideration and, perhaps, a change of mind.
