This is a big problem. When consumers decide to slow their spending, the entire economy slows. When they feel bad for an extended period of time the only good thing that comes of it is a higher savings rate. Remember how the dolts in the administration touted record credit card use? If consumers start paying off their credit cards they are not spending in current terms, simply completing purchases made months ago. As higher fuel costs continue to seep into the economy those costs will weigh heavily on consumers for months, right up to and beyond the election.
