They have never had autonomy in the history of the world, even before the US and UK existed. But they have had multiple chances in the past, which they refused because they want everything, and will compromise on nothing.

The opportunity will arise again. Unfortunately, that will likely require them to recognize Israel's right to exist, which they seem to be dead set on refusing. Can't really blame Israel for refusing to recognize a Palestine nation when the Palestinians refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist.
