It's a stupid idea because making poor people poorer doesn't really help a rich person.

Look at the results from increased demand of goods and services through the pandemic.

People spending more money is what makes rich people richer.

Not taxing them more, which would kill spending.

The purpose of discussing a sales tax is to get the more vocal opponents to run back to the income tax and wrap their arms around it and continue embracing a system that keeps tens of thousands of accountants, lawyers, IRS agents, and bureaucrats in the govt employed.

States are permitted to tax people at their will and put the burden on the taxpayer to prove they don't owe it.

I moved from Kansas to Kentucky in 2007. back to Kansas in 2009. 2008 was the only year I filed a Kentucky state return only. I earned income while living in both states in 2007 and 2009 so I Filed returns in both states.

2008 was the only year I filed only in Kentucky. When I filed my Kansas return in 2009, Kansas assumed I must have failed to file a return in 2008 so they sent be a bill for about double what I had paid in 2006 (last full year). I had to send them a copy of my return from Kentucky in 2008 and they eventually backed off.

Little known fact about OJ.

When he was acquitted on the criminal charges......that meant his homeowners insurance had to step up and defend him in the wrongful death civil suit.

It paid the policy maximum......I think entirely on defense costs. It wouldn't pay any damages.. just defense.

cities do a horrible job of managing this problem. they allow non-local owners (it's always seems to be an absent owner) neglect it, not pay the property taxes, and cities are slow to take the property back because both the city and the property owner know full well the land it sits on isn't worth the expense of demolishing and developing.

And the can just keeps getting kicked down the road to a point where the city can't afford to allow the liability of something horrible happening to continue further.

The action taken recently? Should have happened at least 25 years ago.
