U.S. power companies have applied for permission to raise electricity prices by billions of dollars, driven by the costs of replacing aging infrastructure and powering data centers for artificial intelligence, according to a new report issued this week by energy affordability advocacy group PowerLines. Utilities across the U.S. have requested or received approval to increase rates for this year's H1 by $29B, more than double the cumulative amount of rate increases requested and approved at this point last year, the PowerLines report said. U.S. customers of National Grid (NYSE:NGG), for example, who are located primarily in New York and Massachusetts, are expected to see their monthly bills increase by up to $50/month as the utility received approval to increase its rates by $708M, according to calculations by the Financial Times. read more
Multiple people were injured at a Lexington, Kentucky, church Sunday after a suspect shot a state trooper, police said. The suspect is also dead. The incident unfolded around 11:35 a.m. ET. The unidentified suspect shot at a trooper and fled the scene before ending up at Richmond Road Baptist Church, Kentucky State Police said in a post on X. Multiple people were injured at the church, police said without elaborating State troopers and the Lexington Police Department secured the suspect, who is dead. It is unclear how the suspect died. The injured trooper is "receiving medical attention," police said. Lexington police will hold a news conference about the incident at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Water rescues and evacuations are underway in central Texas Friday morning after torrential sent river levels surging and triggering deadly flash flooding. At a news conference late Friday morning, Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly declined to specify the number of casualties or missing, but said authorities may do so Friday afternoon. Kerr County is about 75 miles west of Austin. Kelly said they have yet to identify most of the dead. "We're having to fingerprint them at the funeral home. One of them was completely naked, didn't have any ID on them at all," he said. Kerr County is home to many summer camps, and some of the children attending them are among the missing or stranded.
