Putin invaded Ukraine because Russians are, understandably, a bit sensitive about being invaded and because Sec State James Baker promised Gorbachev that NATO would never border Russia, which was a pre-condition for Russia not committing a bloodbath when the Warsaw Pact was breaking up.
