I've always tended to resist the tendency of increasing or expanding definitions of criminality like "hate crime" . Mostly because they tend to become politicized crimes. Politicized crimes of violence and property damage when they spread need to be considered at a more serious level because they breed and expand contagion and greater threats than simply one off non political crimes.
