First-Ever Tesla 'Sentry Mode' Lawsuit Filed After Trump Jr.'s Viral Post Leads to Culprit's Arrest
In a groundbreaking legal case sparked by viral social media activity, Donald Trump Jr.'s online post has played a critical role in identifying a man charged with vandalizing a Tesla vehicle at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
The incident occurred on March 16, 2025, when a Tesla Model X owner, identified anonymously as "J.N." in court filings, returned to discover a severe, deliberate scratch along the passenger side of his vehicle. Reviewing the car's built-in "Sentry Mode" security footage, J.N. found clear evidence of a man intentionally keying his vehicle.
As the video spread online, Trump Jr. reposted a screenshot of the suspect's face to his millions of followers, captioning it, "Internet do your thing." This prompted swift identification of the man in the footage, leading authorities directly to 56-year-old Rafael H. Hernandez of Frisco, Texas.

Subsequently arrested and charged with criminal mischief, Hernandez is now also facing a first-of-its-kind civil lawsuit filed by the Tesla owner. The suit, led by attorneys from the Dallas-based Nachawati Law Group, seeks damages for emotional distress, mental anguish, lost wages, and property damage. Attorneys Majed Nachawati, Drew Bias, and Steve Schulte argue the vandalism was politically motivated, linked to a recent wave of targeted attacks against Tesla owners due to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's involvement with the Trump administration's Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE).
"People have the right to purchase whatever vehicle they want, no matter who owns the company, no matter who operates it," said Nachawati. "They should be able to do that free from harassment, intimidation, or harm."
