CNN on Tuesday reportedly settled its lawsuit with Nick Sandmann, the Covington Catholic High School student whose interaction early last year with Omaha Tribe elder Nathan Phillips at the Lincoln Memorial went viral. The amount of the settlement with CNN was not made public at a hearing in Covington, Ky., according to a local Fox affiliate.
A "friendly" soccer match between rival drug cartels at a prison in northern Mexico on New Year's Eve was anything but, as 16 inmates ended up dead. Held at the Cieneguillas men's penitentiary in the state of Zacatecas, the match pitted members of the Gulf and Zetas cartels against one another on the pitch. According to The Daily Mail, an argument about a dirty tackle in the penalty box led to firearms being drawn and shots being fired. A riot followed, and it took the National Guard and prison officials around three hours to put an end to the violence.

The creation of the sixth branch of the US military was approved as part of the massive $738 billion bill, which includes a healthy (and overdue) raise of 3.1 percent for our troops in addition to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for the civilian federal workforce. The NDAA allocates $13 billion over the next five years to ramp up the new defense branch, which will incorporate the existing Air Force Space Command.
