[W]hen he was president, [Trump] did exactly what he claims Biden did " take money from FEMA's disaster fund to fund migrant programs at the southern border. ... In 2019, the Trump administration, in the middle of hurricane season, told Congress that it was taking $271 million from DHS programs, including $155 million from the disaster fund, to pay for immigration detention space and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers who have been forced to wait in Mexico. read more
The U.S. economy added far more jobs than expected in September, pointing to a vital labor market as the unemployment rate edged lower. Nonfarm payrolls surged by 254,000 for the month, up from a revised 159,000 in August and better than the 150,000 Dow Jones consensus forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage point. read more
Bruce Springsteen has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, denouncing former President Donald Trump as "the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime." Springsteen, 75, posted a nearly three-minute video to his social media pages Thursday afternoon, recorded from inside Roberto's Freehold Grill in Freehold, a diner he's often visited. read more
Over the past 15 years, North Carolina lawmakers have rejected limits on construction on steep slopes, which might have reduced the number of homes lost to landslides; blocked a rule requiring homes to be elevated above the height of an expected flood; weakened protections for wetlands, increasing the risk of dangerous storm water runoff; and slowed the adoption of updated building codes, making it harder for the state to qualify for federal climate-resilience grants. read more
Jennifer Rubin - Vice President Kamala Harris began her speech on Friday at the border with a tough statement of the type we have heard more often from Republicans than Democrats. "The United States is a sovereign nation. And I believe we have a duty to set rules at our border, and to enforce them," she asserted. "I take that responsibility very seriously." And then she noted that "we are also a nation of immigrants." read more
This is what Trump and his Oompa Loompas have wrought through their geyser of lies:
North Carolina Republican Pleads To End Right-Wing Conspiracy Theories About Helene Disaster Recovery
In a Thursday afternoon Facebook post, state Sen. Kevin Corbin, who represents the state's westernmost area, asked his followers for a favor: "Will you all help STOP this conspiracy theory junk that is floating all over Facebook and the internet about the floods in WNC."
Corbin listed several examples: "FEMA is stealing money from donations, body bags ordered but government has denied, bodies not being buried, government is controlling the weather from Antarctica, government is trying to get lithium from WNC, stacks of bodies left at hospitals, and on and on and on."
North Carolina state Rep. Lindsey Prather (D), who represents part of Buncombe County, which has been devastated by Helene, told HuffPost that misinformation has affected the recovery effort. She said she's been working around the clock to communicate accurate information to constituents about resources like food distribution sites.
"The biggest issue is rumors and fake memes and photos of people being trapped in areas around the county, and we send folks out to rescue them, and there's no one there to be rescued," Prather said, noting that such efforts require resources that could be used elsewhere.
She emphasized that most of the misinformation she's seen is not intentional; she said it's often residents getting small windows of cell service, going on Facebook and seeing a post about people being trapped, and then sharing it widely without verifying it. People have also spread misinformation about certain parts of the county unfairly getting more resources than others, when the reality is that the disaster response is focused on getting supplies to the most highly populated and accessible areas.
"That's impacting us, too," said the state legislator. "We're having to take time to respond to things like that, and explain to people how disaster response works."MAGA is a mental disease, make no mistake about it. I simply cannot comprehend the amount of deprogramming it will take for so many to accept and respect reality again.
The federal government has mounted a sprawling response following routine protocol, sending supplies, meals and more than 1,000 personnel; taking aid applications from affected residents and coordinating with state and local agencies. Search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing in remote areas. Some residents have complained about waiting for on-the-ground aid, and the aftermath will require the type of lengthy recovery that often includes issues and obstacles.Today I saw a blurb about Trump again making a joke about the father who was murdered in his assassination attempt.
Trump has sought to blame the hurricane devastation on immigration, on Thursday falsely saying that those affected by the hurricane are getting "no help" because the federal government has instead spent its money "on people that should not be in our country."
FEMA, like other government agencies, has long struggled with funding issues and sometimes draws frustration from communities following disasters. Some residents in areas hit by Helene have complained that federal aid has not yet reached them. But those problems are unrelated to immigration, and misinformation makes it more difficult for disaster victims to understand what's going on and how to access aid, experts say.
Trump Is Making Jokes About the Man Killed at His RallyJust what type of person makes light of a man killed - only because he went to Trump's rally - when his grieving wife tells Trump she'd rather have her husband back than a check worth a million dollars that Trump was so impressed by? The same type of person who'd knowingly lie over and over again about hardworking FEMA and National Guard personnel, doing the best they can under unprecedented circumstances, solely to gain political traction for himself.
In a leaked recording, Donald Trump joked about the death of a man at one of his rallies, during a dinner with donors in August.
Then he described meeting the dead fireman Comperatore's wife, Helen, and decided to make a joke about the whole thing.
"So they're going to get millions of dollars, but the woman, the wife, this beautiful woman, I handed her the check - we handed her the check - and she said, This is so nice, and I appreciate it, but I'd much rather have my husband.' Now, I know some of the women in this room wouldn't say the same," Trump said.
The roomful of guests, who included casino owner Steve Wynn, businessman Thomas Peterffy, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Representative Byron Donalds, Representative Lauren Boebert, and former Senator Cory Gardner, broke out in laughter. Trump wasn't done, though.
"I know at least four couples," Trump said. "There are four couples, Governor [Abbott], that I know, and you're not one of them. At least four couples here would have been thrilled, actually."
What this type of person absolutely should never be (again) is President of the United States.

No, Biden didn't take FEMA relief money to use on migrants - but Trump did
The Facts
FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. On Wednesday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters: "We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting. FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season."
He emphasized there was plenty of money to deal with the current disaster. "We are meeting the moment," he said, adding: "We have the immediate needs right now. On a continuing resolution, we have funds, but that is not a stable source of supply, if you will."
Congress, as part of a short-term spending bill, recently provided $20 billion to the FEMA disaster relief fund. But Mayorkas noted: "That doesn't speak about the future and the fact, as I mentioned earlier, that these extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity, and we have to be funded for the sake of the American people. This is not a political issue."
So how does Trump link this to migrants? A Trump campaign spokesman pointed to FEMA's Shelter and Services Program, which gives grants to local governments and nonprofits to take care of undocumented immigrants. Congress boosted the budget from $360 million in fiscal year 2023 to $650 million in fiscal year 2024. The program's 2023 annual report says it provides shelter, such as hotel/motel services, food and transportation, including plane tickets up to $700 a person.
As we said, Congress appropriated this money, just as it did the disaster fund. There's no evidence that any money from the disaster fund was used to help migrants.
"These claims are completely false," DHS said in a statement Thursday night. "As Secretary Mayorkas said, FEMA has the necessary resources to meet the immediate needs associated with Hurricane Helene and other disasters.
In 2019, the Trump administration, in the middle of hurricane season, told Congress that it was taking $271 million from DHS programs, including $155 million from the disaster fund, to pay for immigration detention space and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers who had been forced to wait in Mexico.
The monthly reports issued by the FEMA disaster fund show $38 million was plucked and given to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in August that year - just before the prime storm period of September and October.
The Pinocchio Test
Trump falsely claims FEMA has run out of disaster money - and then falsely says that's because money instead was spent on migrants. There is no evidence the Biden administration spent FEMA disaster money on migrants. Rather, that's what Trump did.
He earns Four Pinocchios.More projection and gaslighting. Quelle surprise.
I was talking about Biden and his legacy of being a union buster.Biden's labor report card: Historian gives Union Joe' a higher grade than any president since FDR
.See you're polishing your moron reputation again, right Turds?
So... why is the GOP so actively trying to reduce the ability of FEMA to help those in the affected areas who need assistance?
Because when these people emerge - either dead or alive - they'll blame it on Biden/Harris' FEMA. And those who believed the lies about the government not caring about them will become conservative media darlings as they publicly blame their plight on Biden/Harris and FEMA spending its money and resources on immigrants instead of taking care of them, 'the real Americans'.
They create their own narratives and victims. It's a cottage industry with these people.
