Across the Southeast, false rumors and conspiracy theories are flying about Helene, which made landfall as a major hurricane about a week ago, causing at least 229 deaths in six states. The misinformation is adding to the chaos and confusion in many storm-battered communities, including many rural areas that lack power and cell service, leading locals to rely on word of mouth.

In western North Carolina this week, some residents shared false information that a dam was about to burst, prompting hundreds of people to unnecessarily evacuate and diverting the attention of first responders. In eastern Tennessee, some locals spread a hoax about federal officials seizing and bulldozing a town hall. And in many parts of the Southeast, a debunked conspiracy theory has circulated about FEMA spending disaster relief money on helping migrants who are in the country illegally.

In places with internet access, such falsehoods have flourished on social media platforms such as X. The tech company has pulled back on efforts to combat misinformation after its takeover by billionaire Elon Musk, prompting concern from many disaster experts.

Election-year politics has also played a role. Former president Donald Trump has amplified the false claim about migrants during campaign rallies and on his platform, Truth Social. And Mark Robinson, the embattled Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina, has repeatedly alleged that there has been no state government response to Helene, even though Cooper has traversed the affected areas, visiting emergency operations centers and meeting with storm survivors.

"We're in an election year where misinformation and deliberate attempts to sow chaos are certainly part of the strategies being utilized," said Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, a Democratic commissioner in Buncombe County, N.C., which includes Asheville.

The Republicans and trolls intentionally doing this are scum,.... pure unadulterated scum.

Two days before Helene made landfall, record-setting rains were already starting to soak the Blue Ridge Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina. A zone of low pressure along a front pulled water vapor up from the Gulf of Mexico into the mountains, where it quickly rose, condensed into storm clouds, and dumped heavy rain.

They also created a wet, swampy environment that allowed Helene to cling to the last of its strength as it moved deep inland. Hurricanes weaken when they move over dry land - but the water vapor rising off the soaked ground in Helene's path extended the storm's life. "It's slowing its demise," Baker Perry, a professor of climatology at the University of Nevada at Reno, who previously taught at Appalachian State University said. "It's not strengthening, but it's weakening slower than it otherwise would be."

When Helene hit the mountains, it dumped all the remaining water it had collected from the Gulf of Mexico. Across the region, several months' worth of rain fell between Sept. 25 and Sept. 27.

"This was a one-in-1,000 year event across a fairly large area in terms of the three-day rainfall totals," Perry said.

Unable to soak into the saturated soil, water flowed downhill. Along the way, it picked up dirt, boulders, trees and eventually cars, homes and slabs of asphalt. Solid ground became liquid and slid away.

"Eventually things break, and it just comes down in a muddy slurry of huge boulders, huge trees, and sometimes it can be moving 35 miles per hour down the slope of the mountain," Douglas Miller, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. said.

"In the mountains, places flooded with torrents that don't even have creeks. There was never even water there," Perry said.

Helene has become one of the deadliest hurricanes of the modern era. And now a vast operation is underway to provide relief in this difficult terrain.

It's simply sad that desperate Republicans have made hurricane relief a political issue through lies and the complete lack of recognition of just how extensive hurricane damage is. And indeed, Helene was an absolute worst case scenario that our governments and private entities combined couldn't have accurately anticipated before the rapidly developing storm hit catastrophically.

Instead of Americans being informed of the thousands of dedicated workers doing their best under the most difficult of circumstances, Donald Trump and his minions instead spread vicious lies and conspiracy theories untethered to the reality on the ground, adding insult to injury for those wanting for relief workers and services to reach them in many cut-off hollows in North Carolina where roads are debris-strewn or completely washed away.

This is what Trump and his Oompa Loompas have wrought through their geyser of lies:

North Carolina Republican Pleads To End Right-Wing Conspiracy Theories About Helene Disaster Recovery

In a Thursday afternoon Facebook post, state Sen. Kevin Corbin, who represents the state's westernmost area, asked his followers for a favor: "Will you all help STOP this conspiracy theory junk that is floating all over Facebook and the internet about the floods in WNC."

Corbin listed several examples: "FEMA is stealing money from donations, body bags ordered but government has denied, bodies not being buried, government is controlling the weather from Antarctica, government is trying to get lithium from WNC, stacks of bodies left at hospitals, and on and on and on."

North Carolina state Rep. Lindsey Prather (D), who represents part of Buncombe County, which has been devastated by Helene, told HuffPost that misinformation has affected the recovery effort. She said she's been working around the clock to communicate accurate information to constituents about resources like food distribution sites.

"The biggest issue is rumors and fake memes and photos of people being trapped in areas around the county, and we send folks out to rescue them, and there's no one there to be rescued," Prather said, noting that such efforts require resources that could be used elsewhere.

She emphasized that most of the misinformation she's seen is not intentional; she said it's often residents getting small windows of cell service, going on Facebook and seeing a post about people being trapped, and then sharing it widely without verifying it. People have also spread misinformation about certain parts of the county unfairly getting more resources than others, when the reality is that the disaster response is focused on getting supplies to the most highly populated and accessible areas.

"That's impacting us, too," said the state legislator. "We're having to take time to respond to things like that, and explain to people how disaster response works."

MAGA is a mental disease, make no mistake about it. I simply cannot comprehend the amount of deprogramming it will take for so many to accept and respect reality again.

The federal government has mounted a sprawling response following routine protocol, sending supplies, meals and more than 1,000 personnel; taking aid applications from affected residents and coordinating with state and local agencies. Search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing in remote areas. Some residents have complained about waiting for on-the-ground aid, and the aftermath will require the type of lengthy recovery that often includes issues and obstacles.

Trump has sought to blame the hurricane devastation on immigration, on Thursday falsely saying that those affected by the hurricane are getting "no help" because the federal government has instead spent its money "on people that should not be in our country."

FEMA, like other government agencies, has long struggled with funding issues and sometimes draws frustration from communities following disasters. Some residents in areas hit by Helene have complained that federal aid has not yet reached them. But those problems are unrelated to immigration, and misinformation makes it more difficult for disaster victims to understand what's going on and how to access aid, experts say.

Today I saw a blurb about Trump again making a joke about the father who was murdered in his assassination attempt.
Trump Is Making Jokes About the Man Killed at His Rally

In a leaked recording, Donald Trump joked about the death of a man at one of his rallies, during a dinner with donors in August.

Then he described meeting the dead fireman Comperatore's wife, Helen, and decided to make a joke about the whole thing.

"So they're going to get millions of dollars, but the woman, the wife, this beautiful woman, I handed her the check - we handed her the check - and she said, This is so nice, and I appreciate it, but I'd much rather have my husband.' Now, I know some of the women in this room wouldn't say the same," Trump said.

The roomful of guests, who included casino owner Steve Wynn, businessman Thomas Peterffy, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Representative Byron Donalds, Representative Lauren Boebert, and former Senator Cory Gardner, broke out in laughter. Trump wasn't done, though.

"I know at least four couples," Trump said. "There are four couples, Governor [Abbott], that I know, and you're not one of them. At least four couples here would have been thrilled, actually."

Just what type of person makes light of a man killed - only because he went to Trump's rally - when his grieving wife tells Trump she'd rather have her husband back than a check worth a million dollars that Trump was so impressed by? The same type of person who'd knowingly lie over and over again about hardworking FEMA and National Guard personnel, doing the best they can under unprecedented circumstances, solely to gain political traction for himself.

What this type of person absolutely should never be (again) is President of the United States.

This was Mayorkas 3 months ago:

Do you have reading comprehension issues? Do you realize that intelligent people change their views on topics when new information emerges or conditions dictate taking a different approach than one thought before?

That's precisely why Mayorkas 3 months ago is different than today.

Congress, as part of a short-term spending bill, recently provided $20 billion to the FEMA disaster relief fund. But Mayorkas noted: "That doesn't speak about the future and the fact, as I mentioned earlier, that these extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity, and we have to be funded for the sake of the American people. This is not a political issue."

www.washingtonpost.com

Gee, a tropical storm intensified from a Cat 1 to a Cat 4+ in 24 hours and caused wind and flood damage in 6 different states. Is this "normal" for landfalling hurricanes in the US? Of course not, Helene will be the most expensive storm to ever hit the US before all the costs for recovery are totalled.

3 months ago, Mayorkas was talking about historically normal landfalling hurricanes being covered by the current funding, but not multiple storms at or near the magnitude of Helene. That's why what's he's saying today is different than what he said then.

Is it really that difficult to figure out?

No, Biden didn't take FEMA relief money to use on migrants - but Trump did

The Facts

FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. On Wednesday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters: "We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting. FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season."

He emphasized there was plenty of money to deal with the current disaster. "We are meeting the moment," he said, adding: "We have the immediate needs right now. On a continuing resolution, we have funds, but that is not a stable source of supply, if you will."

So how does Trump link this to migrants? A Trump campaign spokesman pointed to FEMA's Shelter and Services Program, which gives grants to local governments and nonprofits to take care of undocumented immigrants. Congress boosted the budget from $360 million in fiscal year 2023 to $650 million in fiscal year 2024. The program's 2023 annual report says it provides shelter, such as hotel/motel services, food and transportation, including plane tickets up to $700 a person.

As we said, Congress appropriated this money, just as it did the disaster fund. There's no evidence that any money from the disaster fund was used to help migrants.

"These claims are completely false," DHS said in a statement Thursday night. "As Secretary Mayorkas said, FEMA has the necessary resources to meet the immediate needs associated with Hurricane Helene and other disasters.

In 2019, the Trump administration, in the middle of hurricane season, told Congress that it was taking $271 million from DHS programs, including $155 million from the disaster fund, to pay for immigration detention space and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers who had been forced to wait in Mexico.

The monthly reports issued by the FEMA disaster fund show $38 million was plucked and given to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in August that year - just before the prime storm period of September and October.

The Pinocchio Test

Trump falsely claims FEMA has run out of disaster money - and then falsely says that's because money instead was spent on migrants. There is no evidence the Biden administration spent FEMA disaster money on migrants. Rather, that's what Trump did.

He earns Four Pinocchios.

More projection and gaslighting. Quelle surprise.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 254,000 in September, higher than the average
monthly gain of 203,000 over the prior 12 months. In September, employment continued to trend
up in food services and drinking places, health care, government, social assistance, and
construction. (See table B-1.)

Employment in food services and drinking places rose by 69,000 in September, well above the
average monthly gain of 14,000 over the prior 12 months.

Health care added 45,000 jobs in September, below the average monthly gain of 57,000 over the
prior 12 months. Over the month, employment rose in home health care services (+13,000),
hospitals (+12,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+9,000).

Employment in government continued its upward trend in September (+31,000). Government had an
average monthly gain of 45,000 jobs over the prior 12 months
. Over the month, employment
continued to trend up in local government (+16,000) and state government (+13,000).

Employment in social assistance increased by 27,000 in September, primarily in individual and
family services (+21,000). Over the prior 12 months, social assistance had added an average of
21,000 jobs per month.

Construction employment continued to trend up in September (+25,000), similar to the average
monthly gain over the prior 12 months (+19,000). Over the month, nonresidential specialty
trade contractors added 17,000 jobs.

Employment showed little change over the month in other major industries, including mining,
quarrying, and oil and gas extraction; manufacturing; wholesale trade; retail trade;
transportation and warehousing; information; financial activities; professional and business
services; and other services.

#9 is a complete LIE. Look at the numbers released by the BLS above and they're nothing like what this new gaslighter claims.

Do the math yourself: Food services - 69,000; Healthcare - 45,000; GOVERNMENT - 31,000 (14,000 BELOW the 12-month average); Social assistance - 27,000; Construction - 25,000 = 172,000 with the other sectors accounting for the balance - noted in the last paragraph.

Why do you people have to lie incessantly when the truth is readily available?

With the nation's economy - and much of the president's legacy - hanging in the balance just weeks before the election, White House chief economist Lael Brainard told management that they needed to come up with a new offer to the striking longshoremen. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stressed that Hurricane Helene magnified the importance of a deal. Labor Secretary Julie Su expressed optimism that the union would agree to a temporary extension if raises were included.

And then, in a surprising move, as the call was wrapping up, Zients told the board members of the United States Maritime Alliance that he was going to tell Biden in about an hour that they had agreed to propose a new offer to the union. By that point, the shipping executives had agreed to do no such thing. Zients was saying they would.

"I need the offer today - not tomorrow. Today," Zients said on the call. "I'm going to brief the president in an hour that you believe you can get this done today."

Less than 12 hours later, White House officials were celebrating a deal to reopen the ports until January - postponing the issue until after this November's election. The agreement provides collective if temporary relief to skittish Democrats from the White House to Capitol Hill, while buoying Vice President Kamala Harris along with Friday's strong jobs report.

I'm open to theories, but in no alternate universe - and certainly not in this one - would Donald Trump have been able to pull off what Joe Biden and his staff were able to in quickly settling the dockworkers strike, alleviating all fears of what its continuation would have meant for our economy, with the strike's ability to negatively effect every household in America.

This is what happens when you have a wizened leader - not an ego-driven braggart show-off - in charge of the nation's economic well being. Diamond Joe understands the true art of the deal in ways Trump can't even contemplate simply because Joe was acting primarily in this nation's best interests, not just his own and his legacy's.

But I have little doubt that Trump would have stopped the strike quickly as well, the difference being he would have ordered strikers back to work by invoking the Taft-Hartley Act because he could care less about the workers' desires, only caring about the owners' and his own.

Trump has been trying to weaponize the Hurricane Helene relief efforts, accusing the Biden administration of failing to provide adequate assistance. As part of his critique, he claims that there is no money available for hurricane relief because it was spent already to handle the surge of migrants at the southern border.

Trump's claims have been echoed by his supporters, such as billionaire Elon Musk. But Trump is completely wrong.

Even though Trump was once president, he still appears to have little clue about the appropriations process. What's even richer is that when he was president, he did exactly what he claims Biden did - take money from FEMA's disaster fund to fund migrant programs at the southern border.

Trump has a habit of assuming other politicians act in the same way as he would. So we wondered why he would accuse Biden of raiding the FEMA disaster fund to handle undocumented migrants.

It turns out that's because he did this! In 2019, the Trump administration, in the middle of hurricane season, told Congress that it was taking $271 million from DHS programs, including $155 million from the disaster fund, to pay for immigration detention space and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers who have been forced to wait in Mexico. "The U.S. is facing a security and humanitarian crisis on the Southern border," the administration said in its notice that it was redirecting the funds.

The monthly reports issued by the FEMA disaster fund show $38 million was plucked and given to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in August that year - just before the prime storm period of September and October.

I'm so tired of this ish, I can't wait for November 5th to come and go. Yet again, projection is Donald Trump's best friend as he tries to falsely accuse and blame the Biden Administration for exactly what he did in 2019 - take money from FEMA and spend it on immigrants at the southern border.

Quelle surprise.
