Despite Earlier Remarks, Musk Now Opposes Tariffs on Chinese Electric Cars

Mr Musk's comments are at odds with a warning he made in January that Chinese car makers would "demolish" competitors from other countries if there were no trade barriers.

In January he absolutely said that barriers were needed to prevent China from destroying US EV sales.

Elmo must be hanging out with RFK and caught a brain worm.

PARIS, May 23 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab founder Elon Musk told tech investors in Paris on Thursday he opposed U.S. tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), an about-face from his January warning that trade barriers were needed or China would "demolish most other car companies in the world."

I wonder what changed?

Oh...Biden put tariffs in, therefore fElon has to be against them.

"In fact, I was surprised when they were announced. Things that inhibit freedom of exchange or distort the market are not good,"

"Not good" is subjective. Bad for consumers? Certainly. But typically, good for smaller special interest groups that would benefit from these things.

If the long term goal of the United States is to preserve our status as the world's largest economy and ig China wants to build and export, what are by many expert accounts, very high quality EVs then we would be foolish to put up barriers to them being imported into the United States; Yes it will cost some jobs at HM and Ford and some profits too and, even more importantly aflood of those EBs over here and in EU, Japan and other markets wouls signicantly reduce the amoimy of oil we use for transportation and effect the pace of "climate change," The low price our auto industry fears will make them sell like hotcakes and greatly reduce the time span required to shift from fossil fuel driven vehicles to EVs and it would be at China's expenze. The only way they can build and sell those vehicles so cheaply is with hugw government subsidies to their auto industry. How long can China afford to do yjay? So the net resuld will be a new fleet of EVs here, reducing our oil dependancy and a strugglinf economy like China spending huge amounts of money they don't really have to waste on cars for Americans. China will ne losing money on every car they swll to us and antone who has ever succeeded in business knows that is a recipt for economic failure. I think Joe Biden is focused on ptotectimg auto industry jobs and Donald Trump is focused on oil industry profits but thet are boyj wrong; The auto industry has to figure out how to build competitive EVs and the oil industry will have to shribk which would be a very good thing. I honestly don't care about their profits after the ""O peration I raqi L iberation! We've lost enough already helping the oil industry poison our atmosphere and create weather patterns never before seen with destruction on a monumental scale. No, let the Chinese finance a new generation of cars and help the world get off oil. One thing about Communists, they aren't very smart in business and let;s face it the free market will be our best bet for the future.
And I did ezpress this same idea here previously but that was before elon Musk changed his mind too! I might not be one of his biggest fans but he is still a genius. who am I to disagree with him?

IMO, it's a time problem.

Without tariffs it's possible for your country to lose all capabilities to defend itself.

"Without tariffs it's possible for your country to lose all capabilities to defend itself."

Defend ourselves from what? Good, cheap cars that don't pollute?

What you really mean is GM and Ford can't defend their profits, oil companies can't defend their profiys. Onrironut, a right winger who no longer believes in the free msrket! My goodness how quickly they drop that basic principle of Capitalism,

Keep things in perspective. We are talking about EVs.

GM and Ford are major US defense contractors. Ukraine is driving around GM built LAVs right now.

Cheap Chinese EVs force Tesla to make cheaper American EVs. Especially in China.

BTW it's my understanding that no Chinese EVs are currently even being sold in America.

Because they can't pass US safety certifications, yet.
