How Iran Faked Being Ginni Thomas to Hack Trump

A team of Iranian hackers impersonated Ginni Thomas, the wife of conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, in an effort to extract information from people close to former President Donald Trump, CNN reported. An indictment unsealed on Friday alleges that the three Iranian men gained access to the email account of a Trump campaign official this summer, which allowed them to steal debate-preparation material and information on possible vice presidential candidates.

Tweet is about another indictment involving Iran. They seem to dislike us for some reason...

New details here: The IRGC hackers impersonated Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to try to hack one former senior US official and other targets, according to the indictment and sources familiar with the matter: https://t.co/MkXkohNr9g https://t.co/zvQ6tc2sQl" Sean Lyngaas (@snlyngaas) September 27, 2024

Story updated with additional details. Of note: Indictment states that the IRGC-linked hackers were collecting information that could be used to avenge Soleimani's death, which tracks with what we know about Charming Kitten being kinetic ops-adjacent. https://t.co/MkXkohNr9g— Sean Lyngaas (@snlyngaas) September 27, 2024

I think you buried the lede - but thanks for this extremely important information being lost in the undertow of all things Trump.

A bigger deal than the indicted IRGC hackers in Iran. This man was here, working for our government.
To restate the obvious, this is far more than just a hack; Iran had a double agent inside our government.

More from the cited article...

... Although Ginni Thomas is not mentioned by name in the indictment, it says that the hackers created a fake email using the identity of a "spouse of a sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice."

CNN reported that this is Thomas.

The account was created in April 2020, but wasn't used in the hacking efforts until this year. Between April and May 2024, the email was used as part of a phishing campaign that targeted, among others, a former security adviser to a former president. ...

So, creating an account years ago, only to have that account being used recently?

Gee, where have we seen such behavior?

Where, oh, where, have we seen such behavior?

Can you elaborate?

You are also missing that the interaction with Ginni Thomas was so expected that they fell for it.

Why was the wife of a current and supposed to be unbiased Supreme Court Justice expected to be emailing and working with the GOP no questions asked?
