A Louisiana Law Meant to Fight Teen Violence Is Sweeping 17-Year-Olds Arrested for Lesser Crimes Into Adult Court

Louisiana's criminal justice system now treats all 17-year-olds as adults. Lawmakers lowered the age from 18 to curb teen violence, but nearly 70% of the 17-year-olds arrested in the state's three largest parishes aren't accused of violent crimes.

17 year olds are old enough to know better.

FTA: Just 13% of the defendants " a little over two dozen " have been accused of the sort of violent crimes that lawmakers cited when arguing for the legislation, such as rape, armed robbery and murder. Prosecutors were able to move such cases to adult court even before the law was changed.

In other words, a stupid law that fixed nothing other than to put all crimes committed as a 17-year old juvenile on the permanent record of someone still considered a kid. Just guessing they aren't giving them the benefits of being an adult are they? Nope, not guessing - knowing. Just as an example, I know gangs use under aged kids for crimes on the theory they won't be charged as an adult. This does nothing to change that either. The scare scenarios used as illustrated would have been charged as adults anyhow. '

I am sure there is a financial motivator here (You private prisons and all that) in addition to look "we are cracking down on crime" - that is going down anyhow.

It should be illegal to charge anyone under 18 as an adult UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Not old enough to vote = not old enough to be charged with a crime. ANY crime.

If you're surprised by this, it's because you've never lived in Orleans or East Baton Rouge Parish. Orleans used to be the worst until Katrina, when half of the criminal element was relocated to Baton Rouge.

Now gangs will have 16 year olds commit the crimes that previously were done by 17 year olds.
