US Falls to Historic Low Ranking on World Happiness Report

"That gradual decline in well-being in the United States is, if you start digging into it, especially driven by people that are below 30," Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, professor of economics at the University of Oxford, leader of the Wellbeing Research Centre and editor of the World Happiness Report, tells Fortune. "Life satisfaction of young people in the U.S. has declined."

"The U.S.'s ranking is also explained by larger inequality compared to the Nordic countries, like Finland (no.1), Denmark (no.2), and Iceland (no.3).

"In these Nordic Scandinavian countries, a rising tide lifts all boats, so the levels of economic inequality are much less, and that reflects in well-being as well," De Neve says.

"In Finland, most people will rate [their happiness] as seven or an eight, whereas if you look at the distribution of well-being in the States, there's a lot of 10s out there, but there's a lot of ones as well."

It's OK. We have assurances that inequality doesn't matter. Ax' MB.

Hi Corky. Gosh, people in a socialist country are the happiest in the world? Who would have thought that? And the Finns, who fought off the Soviet bear twice in two wars, live with this brutish, violent country as a neighbor. And they're still happy.

People are unhappy for many reasons, but chief among them is the sense of helplessness that we have a hapless madman in charge of our collective fates.

Lash yourselves to the mast; fight back when and how you can. Wish for Trump's early death.

People are unhappy in America today, specifically, because that vicious and spitful monster Trump is threatening EVERYONE'S Social Security.

Not the sort of thing you can shrug off easily.

Back in the early 2000's when I used to travel to The Netherlands on business, one thing that I noticed while I was there ... everyone I interacted with seemed to be so happy. o the point that it almost seemed odd during my first couple of visits.

But after a few visits, I realized that The Netherlands was a happy nation.

I believe it finished #5 in the rating noted in this thread.

- a socialist country

Yes... a social democracy with a thriving capitalist economy.

Their companies, however, don't see their people as fodder for their gardens.

And the list of benefits their employees have is impressive, and more than makes up for taxes.

Also, the wages are good, unlike here where poverty is a function of low wages and poor benefits... not immigrants or whatever is the Republican Fear Mongering of the Week.

Without checking, I'm sure the data that goes into this has little or nothing to do with Donald Trump's presidency, especially the social security thing.

It's about timing and when the data was collected. I'll research this more but I have to believe it's data collected almost entirely when Joe Biden was president.....not that I'm blaming Joe for anything. Just sayin....

To provide a more robust estimate of the average life evaluation in each country, we combine the responses from the last three years. For example, our 2025 rankings are based on combined data from 2022 to 2024. Using a sample size of at least 3,000 provides a more precise estimate and reduces random sampling error.

I think the reason why the US keeps slipping is because our health sucks. Yes, our health care system sucks which is why our health sucks. It's to the point where we can conclude way too many Americans don't value their health......much less their healthcare.
