Watchdog: IRS Lost 31% of Tax Auditors in DOGE Downsizing

... More than 3,600 revenue agents -- responsible for collecting tax payments -- have left the IRS, according to an IRS watchdog report.

In addition, 18% of revenue officers, who oversee challenging tax cases, and 10% of tax examiners -- front-line employees who review returns -- have also left the agency, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in a recent report. ...

How much proper tax money will the IRS be unable to collect because of Mr Musk's crippling of the IRS?

And, as a side question, OK, maybe the main question, who seems to benefit from this?

The Top 1% who can afford lawyers to fight the IRS?

Or the low- and middle-income workers who cannot afford to fight the IRS?

It's not a bug. It's a feature.

GOP needs to neuter the IRS so the wealthy can rip off our tax system even more than they could with the existing structure they bought and paid for.

@#3 ... GOP needs to neuter the IRS so the wealthy can rip off our tax system ...

That's the way it is looking.

All those IRS auditors that fmr Pres Biden hired now have apparently been shown the egress.

The goal was to hamstring the agency so millionaires can rip off the treasury.

Only dems would be for a larger IRS, but the Again I suspect many of those seems have a low income where they do not have to pay federal income taxes, so no skin in the game.

"Only dems would be for a larger IRS, but the Again I suspect many of those seems have a low income where they do not have to pay federal income taxes, so no skin in the game."

You've got it completely backwards.

Moneyed interests want to kill the IRS enforcement ability.
So they do not have to pay federal income taxes.
So they don't lose any skin in the game.
