Norm of 'Cheers' Dies

George Wendt, an American actor and comedian who earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for his performance as Norm Peterson on the beloved NBC comedy series "Cheers," died Tuesday morning at his home. He was 76.

Jason Sudeikis' uncle earned Emmy nominations six years running after getting started on Second City in his hometown of Chicago.

George Wendt, who bellied up to the bar to portray the beer-quaffing everyman Norm Peterson for all 11 seasons of the fabled NBC sitcom Cheers, has died. He was 76.

Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at home, his family confirmed early Tuesday morning.

"George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him," a rep for Wendt said in a statement. "He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time."

I did a stage show with George about a half-dozen years ago. He was a good guy, and funny, but felt he was a bit trapped by family members (offspring)) expecting similar income to Cheers.

He also HATED people calling him "Norm". Every night at curtain call, yells of "Noorrrrm" would ring out ...

... and George would wince. Every time.

The writers of Cheers have also noted that they tired of having to write his response to that greeting in the show itself.

That aside, he was a force in the show, a force that added to the overwhelming success of the show.

R.I.P. George Robert Wendt Jr.

His best role was as Buster in Gung Ho. A great movie from back when Democrats still believed in American workers - just the "superior enemy" has changed in their mind from Japanese to Chinese.
