EC President Ursula von der Leyen announced sanctions against Israel and new aid for Ukraine during her annual State of the EU address, with the timing shaped by Russian drone incursions into Poland and Israeli airstrikes in Qatar targeting Palestinian resistance leaders. The EU will suspend bilateral support to Israel, propose sanctions on extremist Israeli ministers and violent settlers, and seek a partial suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement " the first concrete steps after months of criticism that the EU has failed to respond adequately to Israel's horrific ethnic cleansing in Gaza. "Man-made famine can never be a weapon of war," President von der Leyen emphasized, calling Israeli atrocities in Gaza "unacceptable." Earlier this week Brussels condemned IDF airstrikes in Doha targeting Palestinian resistance leaders, saying they "breach international law and Qatar's territorial integrity."
Von der Leyen announced a $7 billion "drone alliance" with Ukraine, a "reparations loan" funded by profits from frozen Russian assets, and a summit on returning abducted Ukrainian children. "Europe will defend every inch of its territory," von der Leyen resolutely declared. Earlier this month, Von der Leyen's plane was reportedly targeted with a GPS jammer by Russia and Bulgarian nationalists attacked a vehicle which they thought she was riding in. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the Hague ordered Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, but the Likud regime has been defiant. The death toll in the Gaza Strip is now an incredible 64,656, the majority of whom are children and women; an additional 163,503 have been maimed or wounded by the IDF. One AI calculation estimates the IDF will have killed 81,560 Muslims and Christians in Gaza before the end of the year, which is higher than my rough estimate of 68,500. An international arrest warrant issued by the ICC for crimes against humanity and other depravations remains active for Likud PM Benjamin Netanyahu. An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Link: ICJ Genocide Ruling .
