  • A Hamilton County resident tested positive for West Nile virus, making it the second human case reported in Indiana this year. Idaho reported its first West Nile-related death and Connecticut reported two cases of West Nile in Bridgeport. California reports West Nile disease is spreading among the birds in the northern counties. The West Nile virus is primarily spread by mosquitoes. In mild cases, symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and rash. However, some people can develop more severe symptoms, such as inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, muscle paralysis, and death.
  • The CDC reported there are 50 cases of Chikungunya virus nationwide. The virus, which is spread by the Aedes mosquito, can cause sudden, agonizing joint pain in the hands and feet that can be so severe that it leaves sufferers unable to move normally for months.
