This pivot has been in the works for some time.

Over the past twenty years Israel has ramped up the violence, killing Palestinians like Russians in Aleppo.

Both Israel and Russia are on a Vision Quest to restore their Former Greatness.
Russia wants Ukraine and the rest of the former Soviet Socialist Republics.
Israel wants Gaza, the West Bank, and southern Lebanon.
They want these things almost as much as China wants Taiwan.

America, despite Trump's intentions, just isn't as far right and Imperialist as Israel and Russia are, these days.
The United States doesn't really want to annex Greenland or Venezuela with that sort of fervor.
