Based on a sampling of preliminary crime statistics from 550 U.S. law enforcement agencies, the year is expected to end with a roughly 20% decrease in homicides nationwide, Jeff Asher, a national crime analyst, told ABC News. "So, even taking a conservative view, let's say its 17% or 16%, you're still looking at the largest one-year drop ever recorded in 2025," said Asher, co-founder of AH Datalytics and a former crime analyst for the CIA and the New Orleans Police Department.

How many law enforcement agencies are there in the USA?
How is law enforcement structured in the US? There are about 17,600 government agencies involved in law enforcement in the US, including nearly 100 federal agencies and 17,500 state and local agencies.Sep 12, 2025

The vast majority of which probably don't register a single homicide a year.

You do know these stats are run by actual statisticians who know how to power their analyses to ensure accuracy within a given +- % range, right?

You don't have to measure it all, just like you don't have to poll every person in the country to get polling data.

"The vast majority of which probably don't register a single homicide a year."

Especially when it's the cops doing the homicide!
There is no federal reporting requirement for police to report any homicides at all -- done by cops or civilians.

True, but those error bars are gonna be pretty big when there's "NO DATA" from countless Republican jurisdictions all across the country.
