A commentator on TV mentioned the difference between the IRGC and the regular army. He said there have probably been talks between the U.S. and military leadership in Iran. IF, and that's a big if, Khamani is killed, the army is the only sizeable group in Iran that could take control of Iran and put down the IRGC, the ayatollah's private security force.
Civilians are always in the crosshairs of the IRGC. Without the army to put them in their place chaos is the most likely scenario.
Now, if the shah's son was actually viewed as a prime minister possibility, as the Iranian diaspora think he should be, and he's backed by the army, it's possible a government could be formed. But no one in the WH has told us what the end looks like.
