When I was a kid (b.1955) the richest guy in the country made $2-$5 million. I remember when Pete Rose became "the first singles hitter to make $100,000".

We had a tax code with graduated marginal rates, just like now. But instead of the top rate covering everything 1.5-3.5 million above it, the top rate now covers 1000x greater a gap.

IOW, folks will often talk of the monies going out in Social Security, without mentioning the rest of the equation: the constant income. SS is an EQUILIBRIUM EQUATION; ideally, money in matches money out. Frankly, that's why nobody complained from the time Reagan started OVER-collecting, to the time we knew the equation would go underwater: 2010-2011, no matter who was President (Obama, in our case). During that time, we were building a surplus which we're currently spending down. That said, even at the nadir, SS taxes cover roughly 70% of current payments.
