I'm amazed at the young people my sons' ages who went to college and came back to small-town Appalachia. They seem to be comfortable ... and I'd say living below potential that could emerge if they moved to what are often derided here as cities in absolute peril.

I tell people I wouldn't recommend it, but it's called the fear and anxiety diet.

I graduated in 1980 and went straight to work (first job, often mandated 10- or 12-hour days, sometimes six or seven days a week) at $5 an hour.

No college debt because my "thrifty" father seems to have put me on the payroll of the family business at age six, among other serious grifting. I was earning money and unknowingly contributing to Social Security until, oddly enough, I went to work full-time at age 20.
