Looking at it from that perspective, I think the reason that so much debt is accumulated is because there's no guilt or shame involved in the average American's understanding of the situation. In Switzerland (and more so in Germany) borrowing or accumulating debt is about as horrific of a "sin" as adultery. Even the German language expresses the two words- guilt and debt- as coming from the same root (schuld/schulden).

Actually, the interesting twist is that this round, Iran launched ballistic missiles offensively, not in retaliation for an initial US strike.
