I was there when all there was was a runway, tin huts, 100 Navy SeaBees, 2 American and British officers. and a million coconut crabs. It was like what we've seen from WWII. One of the SeaBees grew up just a few houses from me. That was a surprise! And on Christmas Day.

It's sad to realize how many of Trump's appointees are merely former TV hosts he saw. As though pseudo celebrity meant they're qualified to run important American government agencies. VOA is an important part of our remaining "soft power" outreach. Unfortunately at the same time the world has lost faith in us because of Trump.

I'll check it out. Thanks. I try keep a 50-50 balance for reading fiction-nonfiction.

Many years ago, I read great book about the attack on Pearl Harbor - considered the gold standard - "At Dawn We Slept."

It was abridged from several exhaustively researched volumes, telling the tale from both sides (including accounts based on interviews with Japanese and Americans) about the planning and execution of the attack. I can HIGHLY recommended it!

I can't remember the ambassador's name, but IIRC he was misled as well.

Meanwhile, our wet, squishy fart of a president mouth-farted in bad taste with the Japanese PM sitting 3' away.
