The people who voted for Trump are unable or unwilling to acknowledge they made a bad decision, so they suppress whatever possible misgivings they might have about certain aspects of his aberrant speech and behavior in favor of some supposedly "big-picture" view of him. Sure, he's an authoritarian, but at least "he's in favor of strong borders," they'll say, or "He's really giving it to the libs!"
