Because of that, the same people who used to be scored as "paying income taxes" are now doing the same things, yet they're scored as "not paying income taxes".

Republicans literally passed childrearing subsidies on a Tuesday, and started complaining on Wednesday that less people were "paying taxes".

And here you are, dutifully repeating the talking point.

The biggest loophole in the US tax code is GRATs, aka Grantor Annuity Trusts. GRATs make the inheritance tax a laughingstock, by allowing unlimited amounts of money transferred from one generation to another. The trust is set up, the money is placed, and the owner simply ... disclaims it! It goes to the next heir, tax-free. And every billionaire uses it, from Adelson to Soros to Thiel to Winfrey to Zuckerberg. Sheldon Adelson used it to transfer $8 billion to his kids, avoiding roughly $2.3 billion in inheritance tax.

And why isn't it repealed? Because, as one wag put it, "the only people affected are the members of the political donor class"
