It is illegal for a country to refuse the return of a citizen. We're seeing this in Syria with ISIS fighters who are held in camps because their home countries do not want them returned.

As a lawyer, how to you interpret the use of the term "jurisdiction." When I read the language, it looks like it is saying that any person born in the US is a citizen, and therefor subject to US jurisdiction. And this is absolutely true. Regardless of where you go after you are born, so long as you're a US citizen, you are expected to pay taxes to the US government.

I don't see how Trump can use an executive order to override a constitutional amendment. I'm curious to see where this goes. I'm totally in favor of getting rid of Jus Soli, but when I read the language in the 14th amendment, it seems pretty clear.

Germany's policy on birthright citizenship seems like a pretty solid model that could be followed if the 14th amendment were overturned.

We can never know for sure, but I do think that Russia is largely following LOAC principles. The problem is, Russia is about where the US was in Desert Storm technology-wise. They do have some precision weapons, but they are limited, and not very accurate. When I was flying, I could drop a low-collateral bomb on the top of a house to take out a sniper while causing minimal damage to the house and everything in it. That was the standard. Russia does not have that capability.

You're not wrong, but try selling increased taxes on lower and middle-class income earners in the U.S. Even if it comes with expanded benefits. It's likely that some of the strongest opposition would come from progressives.

Which war was that? I honestly don't know, and I spent a year running the coalition targeting enterprise in Syria.

That's kinda my thought. The Islamic resistance trades hostages for the time and space required to reconstitute.

What seems a bit encouraging is the comments by the Palestinians who are returning to their destroyed houses and wondering why it all happened. Sure, the Islamic leaders now have more street cred while they're snorting coke off the asses of European hookers in Dubai, but I'm not sure that the narrative is going to hold that this whole Hamas campaign was being conducted for the benefit of Palestinians.

But more to the point...my job is not a 9-5 kind of thing. If I don't actually need to go into my office, I don't. In fact, it's better if I don't. Not so much for me, but for the other people who may need to access the systems available in my office. That doesn't mean we don't sometimes work 16-hour days, or spend weeks or months traveling, but no one is going to care where I am, provided that I am getting my work done.

And one of my colleagues who is a US military officer just had a baby in June. He is entitled to 12 weeks of paternity leave. he's taken seven days of it so far. He is hoping to take the rest here soon, but if there is work to be done, there is work to be done. And that will always come first.
