The War of Independence brought freedom from England. The new country was very expansion minded and didn't like countries not wanting to be isolated. (Japan and the Iron ships)

Why should the US defend press freedom overseas? It's not the US responsibility.

Isolationism and nationalism and any -ism that keeps the US out of other nations is thoroughly rejected by the media and politicians.

The average joe wants us to leave the world alone.

George Washington's statement is rejected as if the US must be the defender of the world and any nation under rule.
