When a passenger jet roaring down the runway toward takeoff at New York's LaGuardia Airport had to slam on the brakes earlier this month because another plane was still on the runway, Renee Hoffer and all the other passengers were thrown forward in their seats. Hoffer wound up in the emergency room the next day after the near miss on May 6 because her neck started hurting and her left arm went numb. "The stop was as hard as any car accident I've been in," Hoffer said. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that they are investigating the incident in which a Republic Airways jet had to abort takeoff and slam to a stop because a United Airlines plane was still taxiing across the runway. The close call happened despite the airport being equipped with an advanced surface radar system that's designed to help prevent such close calls.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio refused to say that Russian President Vladimir Putin was a "war criminal," even though he admitted war crimes had been committed during the invasion of Ukraine. At a Wednesday House hearing, Rep. Bill Keating (D-MA) pressed Rubio for answers about Putin's role in war crimes against Ukraine. "The person we're negotiating with, Vladimir Putin, is he a war criminal?" Keating asked. "Well, I think you can look at instances that have happened there and certainly characterize them as war crimes, but our intent is to end the war," Rubio said. "Is he a war criminal?" Keating repeated. "We can't end the war without talking to Mr. Putin," Rubio replied.

President Donald Trump has a lot on his plate. He hasn't been able to end any of the wars, Congress can't get his "big, beautiful bill" passed, and the courts keep stalling his governance-by-executive-order agenda. But for days now, the president has been obsessing over Bruce Springsteen. On Wednesday " as Republicans in Congress slogged through an hours-long markup session on his signature budget legislation " the president woke up and posted a presumably fan-made edit of himself knocking over the "Born in the U.S.A." singer with a golf ball. The video spliced together a clip of Trump hitting a drive at a LIV Golf event, with a clip of Springsteen tripping on stage at a 2023 concert in Amsterdam. A golf ball was edited into the clip to make it appear as if the president's shot had knocked Springsteen over.
