According to US law they are variously:
Alien, Illegal Alien, Unauthorized Alien, Without Lawful Status, and/or Unlawfully Present.
Unauthorized Alien is what appears when referring to stuff like illegally employed farm workers, 8 US Code 1423a.
Illegal Alien is what appears in INA 274a, referring to unlawful entry and penalties.
Immigrant is the correct term for those seeking permanent lawful resident, whereas seasonal farm workers hired illegally would be Aliens.
Think it's because they realize immigrants, legal and illegal, have no negative impact on their lives.
