Trump Struggling with Treasury Pick for the Dumbest Reason

He wants someone who'll sell Wall Street on across-the-board tariffs. That person doesn't exist.

"It's a bit different today. Trump needs a Treasury secretary who can sell Wall Street on tax cuts, reduced regulation, and protectionism, but this time it's protectionism on a colossal scale, with tariffs of 10 to 20 percent slapped onto every import plus a 60 percent tariff on all Chinese goods and a tariff of 25 percent to 100 percent on all goods from Mexico, which is an even bigger trading partner than China.

These tariffs would, it is widely agreed, tank the economy and usher in a bear market"and that's before factoring in the worker shortage from Trump's planned mass expulsion of undocumented aliens.

Any Treasury nominee who understands the misery that Trump's tariffs would create will resist them, and any Treasury nominee who doesn't understand, or (more likely) pretends not to, will scare the living daylights out of Wall Street."

'

Wall Street is the only part of the American Establishment that Trump respects. As Bloomberg's "Carmen Reinicke and Esha Dey wrote earlier this week, "the stock market is a way [Trump] keeps score." It's pretty much the only way.

If you wonder why Trump didn't talk about the stock market during the campaign, the reason is that the S&P 500 rose faster under President Joe Biden than at any time since 1945, except for the dotcom boom of the late 1990s, when it rose even faster (under another Democratic president).

Unlike other economic statistics, stock indexes are really hard to lie about, because your audience can see what's happening in their portfolios.

(Then why did Trump voters think the economy was in trouble? Because nearly 40 percent of the population owns no stock, and among those who do all but the richest own very little.)"

Pls don't give him any ideas! Trump just hasn't thought of it yet.

It looks to be Pres-elect Trump vs Mr Musk on this one.

Meanwhile, Pres-elect Trump is watching a SpaceX launch.

Trump, Musk watch SpaceX launch Starship, booster misses landing
www.reuters.com

... Elon Musk's SpaceX launched its giant Starship rocket to space from Texas on Tuesday, advancing the ship's spaceflight abilities but botching an attempt to bring its booster back to land as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump watched from the company's rocket facilities.

The roughly 400-foot-tall (122-meter-tall) rocket system, designed to land astronauts on the moon and ferry crews to Mars, lifted off at 4 p.m. CT (2200 GMT) from SpaceX's sprawling rocket development site in Boca Chica, Texas.

The rocket's 233-foot-tall (71-metre-tall) first stage booster, called Super Heavy, detached from its second stage, Starship, at roughly 40 miles (62 km) in altitude, sending the craft into space.

Super Heavy unexpectedly splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico instead of returning to land, where it was expected to fall into large mechanical arms attached to the tower it launched from.

The last-minute diversion to water indicated something went wrong. ...

And... if I may ask?

Where has VP-elect JD Vance been since election day?

One question I have to ask --- has Mr Musk assumed the role of VP-elect, pushing VP-elect Vance aside?

#6 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-11-19 10:17 PM

has Mr Musk assumed the role of VP-elect

No chance. He's Co-President-elect.

#7 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-11-19 10:20 PM

@#6 ... Where has VP-elect JD Vance been since election day? ...

OK, I found this, fwiw, considering the source ....

VP-elect JD Vance to hold meetings between Gaetz, Hegseth and 'key' GOP senators
www.foxnews.com

... Vance is making calls and connecting with key GOP senators ahead of next year's confirmation hearings ...

Yeah, that's dated today.

Election Day was a couple weeks ago.

What happened to VP-elect Vance?

#8 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-11-19 10:24 PM

"VP-elect JD Vance"

As of January 21st, one triple-cheeseburger away from the Oval Office.

We'll know for sure when Co-President Elon gets an "official" Secret Service detail, if he doesn't already have one.

#11 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-11-19 10:37 PM

I'm surprised Vince McMahon isnt in this administration considering he's basically a reality tv star, a rapist, and a sex trafficker.

He'll get Linda's spot when he fires her.

The next four years is going to be a calamity. Mark my words. I just can't believe how stupid this country has gotten. It's a total disgrace.

@#14 ... The next four years is going to be a calamity. ...

Is that exactly what Pres-elect Trump and the Project 2025 want to occur?

F--k up the Federal government to the point that they can declare it is no longer functional.

That then gives them the leap board from which they start their autocracy.

A curious scenario.

King Dotard II's choice of Treasury Secretary will be more consequential than any other choice he makes. No idiots, grifters, handsy creeps or know-nothing TV shills will be welcome by The Street. Those names currently (11/20/24) being talked about have some level of respectability, but not as much as what Diamond Joe got with picking Janet Yellen. Trump may not believe it, but has been told enough times to NOT SCREW THIS ONE UP. If he does, the impact will be immediate. The person picked must be an adult in the room. If not controlled by the new Treasury Secretary, it can be assured that if half of the plans bandied about by the incoming administration come to pass, the US will have a recession in 2025. The only question will be how severe and for how long...

Then Trump doesn't want a greedster bankster or any Dem. They've had many decades to reap the short term rewards by selling out Americas consumer market to China. Dems say but tariffs will cost American consumers when the Dems have already sold out American production and jobs. Trump needs to appoint trade rep Leitheiser as Sec Treasury and not some huckster pushing China first.

Trump doesn't want a greedster bankster

Of course he does.

He simply needs to find one more loyal to him than they are to their greed.

I actually and seriously surprised he isn't appointing some top exec from Deutsche Bank. That is after all who he owes much of his debt to.

Deutsche Bank loaned Trump $2bn despite multiple red flags, new report claims

Lewzer wants people who owe him, not the other way around.

#24 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-11-20 03:43 PM

I am sure he can find someone that try to do it, but they won't have any credibility.

But then again, none of his cabinet picks do.

Jim Cramer for Treasury?

I didn't think Jim was THAT stupid but apparently he is.

This is the guy who said to sell off all stocks if Obama beat Romney because the market would crash.

He lets political views influence him way too much to be a influential voice for anyone with a modicum of knowledge.
