US Consumer Prices Post First Decline in Nearly Five Years

U.S. consumer prices unexpectedly fell in March amid cheaper gasoline and used motor vehicles, but the improvement in inflation is unlikely to be sustained after President Donald Trump doubled down on tariffs on imported Chinese goods.

... "The good news of an inflation soft print in March needs to be taken with a grain of salt because the trade war against China from where most consumer goods that Americans buy come from has gone into hyper drive," said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS.

The consumer price index dipped 0.1% last month, the first drop since May 2020, after gaining 0.2% in February, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI edging up 0.1%.

Gasoline prices fell 6.3%. Crude oil prices have declined on growing concerns the global economy is slowing. Cheaper gasoline prices more than offset increases in the costs of natural gas and electricity.

Food prices rose 0.4% after climbing 0.2% in February. Grocery store prices increased 0.5%, boosted by a 5.9% rise in the cost of eggs. There were also solid increases in the prices of meat, fish and dairy products. But fruit and vegetable prices decreased as did those for cereals and bakery products. ...

The good news that Trumpy now knows what the word "groceries" means.

"A bag with different things in it."

And the word "groceries" is so old fashioned anyway.

Grandma and me used sit on the porch in the evenings and as the sun set we would sip our black labels and reminisce about the old days when we would hitch up the horses to the wagon and go to the mercantile exchange in town for our monthly bag of "groceries".

But Democrats said it was not possible to lower costs....just another lie they tell themselves. As Trump did his first term, workers actually get ahead of inflation with wage gains. Democrats hate this because it leads to less poor people dependent on the government.

Lastly, you got to love: U.S. consumer prices unexpectedly fell in March. Same with the March jobs report. Why do all reports need to be revised higher under Trump but lower under Biden? Strange - almost like the government lies in all their reports for Democrats.

Wait, what?

Pres Trump has declared that both grocery and egg prices are down.

Grocery store prices increased by 0.5% month over month.

So, should that sustain, that's a 6% increase for a year?

Perhaps also, many of the companies the were gouging the crap out of us during Biden's term now have some wiggle room to lower prices and help prop up agent orange.

Funny stuff!

I know multiple folks in the private sector who have had decreases in pay because Trump is effing with government functioning. And that's not even getting into the tens of thousands of government workers who he illegally fired.

You're right, though. Stuff will definitely get cheaper once there are fewer employed people to pay for it.

#15 | Posted by censored at 2025-04-11 01:47 PM

Stuff isn't going to get cheaper.

That's a lie.
