The Democratic Civil War Is Escalating

The civil war in the Democratic Party ratcheted up another notch as a group founded by Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair David Hogg said it plans to spend millions to unseat Democratic incumbents it believes aren't pushing back hard enough on President Donald Trump.

Democrats have been bitterly divided in the wake of then-Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris' decisive loss to Trump in the 2024 election.

While some Democrats said the party had moved too far to the left and alienated moderate voters, many in the progressive wing argued the party had become too pro-corporation and abandoned the working class.

The divide isn't just ideological but generational as well.

There have been growing calls for new leadership in recent years, with critics arguing that the party's current standard bearers, many of whom are in their 70s and 80s, need to pass the torch to the next generation for the Democratic Party to remain competitive.

That divide has been exacerbated by what younger and more progressive Democrats view as a feeble response to the Trump administration and has led to speculation that the party could be due for its own version of a "Tea Party" revolt from its base. ...

But, yeah, the Democratic party seems to be redefining itself.

Can it do that redefinition quickly enough to matter in 2026?

That seems to be the big question.

It depends on what happens over the next few years.

I'm curious on your thoughts, but at least when it comes to the economy, Trump has gone hard left. Tariffs have for decades been the purview of the far left. Similarly, tax increases on high income earners to transfre money to lower income earners. Not necessarily an economic point, but geopolitical isolation, particularly with regards to NATO, have also been a far-left talking point.

So what does that leave for progressive democrats? Identity politics? That's not going to get the party far. Same with being anti-Israeli.

What's missing in US politics right now is a smaller government, pro-free market candidate. That's the direction I think the Dems could go if they want to win.

Tariffs have for decades been the purview of the far left.

The Democrats held this view until it stopped supporting Unions and unmitigated unchecked immigration.
Unions detest immigration, and supported tariffs.

Seems like in the 90s both parties detested tariffs, as both were ripping off the workers for the fat cats.

I am referring to the Hegelian Dialectic as a way of understanding how societies change.

Its also method used in conflict resolution or developing ideas.
Statement, Opposition, Integration or Unity.

Your statement is hardly a transition or new idea it really just more of the same. Bernie has collapsed from being a outsider against illegal immigration, to one supporting it, along with the large corporations, and with it the collapse of wages for the average worker. AOC is a tiktok phenom thats about it. What has she sponsored? Disappointed in current Democrat leadership, really nothing liberal, borderline illiberal.

You don't understand the current Democrat party machine, there's a reason the USAID protests were so strong.

The party sucks off the government via NGO's and piles a percentage of that back into the party.

It will be interesting as Trump destroys this NGO to Party pipeline how Democrats will organize, and where it will get its money. Certainly won't be from any of these posters.

I think I understand it better than the Republican Party Machine, which seems to have embraced Dennis Kucinich's political ideologies.

Republicans are now far further to the left than the vast majority of Democrats. This is almost as if Bernie had been elected.

When the United States was founded most of our Federal tax revenue was tariffs.
Was the United States founded by leftists?

Maybe it was the Pelosi speech from 2 decades ago when she said they were needed or maybe Biden last year when he used them against Chinese EVs. It is like the deficit - it is only bad for the Dems when the Trump does it.
