Amazon CEO: tariffs have not impacted prices

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told shareholders during a virtual meeting Wednesday (May 21) that the tariffs the President Donald Trump administration imposed on imported goods have not affected sales. "We also haven't yet seen any meaningful average selling price increases," Jassy said, according to a Wednesday Reuters report. "When you have 2 million sellers, they're not all going to take the same action."

So, as predicted by Trump and other - the manufacturers and middle men eat the tariffs and the tariffs ARE NOT paid by the US consumers. For cheap Chinese goods that try to pass on the costs - people simply no longer buy the products as they price themselves out of the market.

The headline from the cited article is: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Says Tariffs Have Not Affected Sales

And regarding prices, ... from the cited article ...

Some sellers have increased prices while others have kept prices the same, he said, per the report. ...

So, some of Amazon's retailers have raised prices, while others have kept the prices the same.

To me, that looks like an increase in the average prices on Amazon.

Some raised, some stayed the same, none were reported to be lowered.

So, net, net, an average increase?

It is a matter of math - if some sellers have raised prices and others have remained flat (no mention of anyone lowering) - and the AVERAGE selling price has not changed, it means that buyers are simply not buying from the sellers that raised prices.

So sales are down as well. That makes sense.

If you are too stupid or too lazy to read the whole article, just read the summary and see this part "Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told shareholders during a virtual meeting Wednesday (May 21) that the tariffs the President Donald Trump administration imposed on imported goods have not affected sales."

@#2 ... and the AVERAGE selling price has not changed, ...

From the summary of this cited article...

... We also haven't yet seen any meaningful average selling price increases ...
[emphasi by the poster of this thread]

So, now, your current alias seems to say that "any meaningful increase" is equivalent to "has not changed?"

have not affected sales."

Ok. So you were wrong.

In what world does 'have not affected sales' translate to 'sales are down'? You are quickly trying to take Lamp's crown as the most ------- stupid poster on this website.

At least I have my answer - I said if you were too stupid or too lazy....case closed, it is too stupid in your case.

"have not affected sales."

Ok. So you were wrong.

Worse than that: he purposely left out the salient word ... the one that BELIES HIS POINT.

It's intellectual dishonesty., bordering on gaslighting.

You said "buyers are simply not buying from the sellers that raised prices". That is known as "affecting sales".

If Amazon says that sale have not been affected, then you are wrong. The only other option is Amazon is lying.

I notice that the poster of that ad hominem attack seems to have nothing to gainsay my #5 post.

@#8 ... It's intellectual dishonesty. ...

I may have a concern about the attribution of "intellectual" in this case.

That aside, dishonesty?

imo, yeah.

@#7 ... I said if you were too stupid or too lazy....case closed ...

Yeah, as if that matters.

"You said "buyers are simply not buying from the sellers that raised prices". That is known as "affecting sales"."

Yes - you are stupid. Quit trying to prove it. What Amazon said is that ITS sales are not affected - meaning total sales volume/revenue has not changed. Also, ITS AVERAGE PRICE FOR SKUS has not changed. That does not mean that it did not change FOR THE INDIVIDUAL SELLERS. What has happened based on the information - some sellers chose to raise prices and some did not or already had American made products. As a result, buyers simply continued to buy from the sellers that DID NOT RAISE PRICES - thereby either eating the tariffs as a middle man OR forcing the suppliers to cut their prices to maintain their margins (the manufacturer eating the tariffs) and STOPPED buying from those that did raise prices. That is the only logical conclusion that can be taken away from the facts presented.

Your statement just shows a complete lack of logic and draws a conclusion directly contradicted by the article.

"If Amazon says that sale have not been affected, then you are wrong. The only other option is Amazon is lying.

That is what they said because that is THE TRUTH. As you are unable to think beyond Trump bad, you are going to go with a conclusion directly contradicted by the article because Trump broke your brain and you are too stupid to apply basic logic.

... So, as predicted by Trump and other - the manufacturers and middle men eat the tariffs and the tariffs ARE NOT paid by the US consumers. ...

No, what was actually said by Pres Trump was that the foreign Countries, e.g. China, pay the tariffs.

Not Americans consumers or American companies or American middle men.

Fact check: Trump and Vance keep falsely describing how tariffs work September 2024)
www.cnn.com

... Former President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance continue to falsely describe how one of their major policy proposals, across-the-board tariffs, would work.

Trump has falsely, and repeatedly, claimed that China " not US importers " pay the tariff.

At a rally in Arizona in mid-August, he claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, is lying when she refers to his tariff plan as a "Trump tax."

"She is a liar. She makes up crap ... I am going to put tariffs on other countries coming into our country, and that has nothing to do with taxes to us. That is a tax on another country," Trump said.

In September, he repeated the claim during an interview with Fox News: "It's not a tax on the middle class. It's a tax on another country."

And he said again during a rally in Wisconsin Saturday that "it's not going to be a cost to you, it's going to be a cost to another country."

Vance said in late August that as a result of tariffs Trump imposed during his presidency, "prices went down for American citizens."

"They went up for the Chinese but they went down for our people," Vance added.

But that's not true. ...

Many links in that article.

But the gist is, Pres Trump and VP Vance lied to the American people about who pays tariffs.
