NATO and the US have have never had a specific objective in Ukraine, just this whishy washy 'keep them supplied' approach.

The objective should have always been to get Russia out of Ukraine. Period.

Even so, Russia looks weaker than ever. Ukraine might be Putin's Afghanistan.

Georgia? Maybe. Individually, Russia would have little chance against either Poland or Finland. If both got involved, the only question would be what language would be spoken in Moscow. Personally, I would favor Polish. I've come to the conclusion that Finnish is a language whose primary purpose is to ---- with people. I can normally pick my way through languages, but Finnish is like some sort of secret code.

Not likely.

The influence of the losses in Afghanistan by the Soviet Union were enabled by Perestroika, as the USSR moved towards liberalization. Vlad has reversed that trend. Russia is now more like the USSR under Stalin, and they still have plenty of meat to throw at the Ukraine problem.

Somewhere around 15,000 Soviet soldiers were killed in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. More than 200,000 Russians have been killed in Ukraine since 2022. The losses have not had a meaningful impact on Russia.

Clearly, Putin is gearing up for another expansionist war if he can get Ukraine to surrender. Germany arming has to alarm a lot of neighbors, but then, NATO cannot depend on the US for much these days. One wonders why Trump just doesn't order all our troops out of Europe...he is more Russia's buddy than Germany's friend.
