Trump Allies Relieved he's Sticking to the Script -- but See Warning Signs

"I wish we had more detailed steps to take," a Republican strategist said.

It was a plod through Trump's take on his year back in office punctuated by moments that he clearly enjoyed more than the recitation of policy: introducing guests, gameshow style, to laud their accomplishments or detail the horrors that were visited upon them.

... President Donald Trump's Republican allies and people close to the administration were relieved at the version of the president that showed up to address the nation tonight, but expressed some concern that he didn't lay out a significant policy agenda for the remainder of the year.

"He's in great spirits and you could see it right away. He kicked-off by celebrating the nation's 250th, bringing in the men's Olympic hockey team," a Trump 2024 adviser told POLITICO.

Like others in this report, the adviser was granted anonymity to speak candidly.

"He immediately got to substance, highlighting his record of delivering affordability for working families and laying out a forward-looking vision to keep lowering costs and rebuilding American prosperity " really meeting the moment."

Ahead of the address, Trump allies' major concern was whether he would stick to the script.

But he has largely followed the teleprompter and focused on messaging his priorities and personal stories. When he did weave away from the text, it was largely to go after Democrats in the room -- for instance, singling out former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. ...

There's a script? I didn't know that. But, then again, even Alfred Jarry's wildly experimental play Ubu Roi(en.wikipedia.org), sometimes rendered as "King Turd" had a script. Here's a real Trumpian line from that work: "That's not my fault! She promised me a big sombrero."
