Woman Wins Kentucky Derby as Trainer for First Time

Golden Tempo and jockey Jose Ortiz rallied down the stretch to win Saturday's Kentucky Derby by a neck, making Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer in history to win the race. The longshto paid $48.24 on a $2 win wager.

I was in Louisville, KY for the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby. The US Post Office even issued a commemorative stamp for the occasion.

I will say that the city of Louisville goes crazy for the Derby.

I saw residents selling parking places in their driveway for multiple hundreds of dollars, so that the out-of-state participants could park their cars.

OK, maybe because it was the 100th anniversary of the Derby that occurred.

But friggin' wow. The city of Louisville went crazy back then ...

Twas a chilly day for the Derby here in Louisville, but at least it didn't rain. Great race, which I watched from the comfort of my family room. The first woman trainer to ever win the Derby.

This morning, I'm hearing the constant roar of private jets flying out. The rich and famous are going back home.

A friend of ours cashed a ticket for the trifecta, which paid $11,000 on a $1 bet. My daughter collected a more modest $57 on a $2 win ticket.

that's a great GREAT HIT !....what the derby is so known for..

--your friend had to push all for show....or did he really have the 70-1 shot singled
in the third spot ?...if he did he needs to get on a plane to vegas or atlantic city NOW !!

I'm a pace handicapper so the trainer is one of the last considerations in triple crown to me

because they're all top shelf....so male or female means nothing........cashing the ticket

does...Ortiz had a really good ride making his way through especially from the

stretch...........DID NOT SEE Golden tempo making up that much ground even though he was one of

the several closers in the field.....I did have revenge...but just for the win and on top

of exacta.....once again the derby pays off BIG....won't get anything near those

odds through the Belmont.

She was very humble in the in the pre-race interview.

Congrats to brothers Jose and Irad Ortiz - great 1-2 race and surge from the tail of the pack.

Interesting fact: 3 horses were scratched and replaced on Wednesday through Friday - Fulleffort, Right to Party and Silent Tactic, which was then replaced by Great White (sired by Violence)... which was scratched just before getting into a starting stall.

I was just a really small nerf, but back in 1998 my oldest sister's husband hit the Exacta on Real Quiet and Victory Gallup and collected nearly 15k on a $100 bet. He still talks about it to this day, so it's hard to forget.

I won 50 bucks at Pimlico once- which I almost immediately spent on crab pretzels and beer.

I knew someone who made an absolute killing betting on the San Diego Chargers the season when they started 0-4.

The coach was a US Army veteran so I was happy too.

My friend never stopped talking about his winnings that year unless there was an IRS guy nearby.

Otherwise: "Drinks are on me!"

What a stupid, sexist comment. As if she can help the fact that she's a woman whose entry won. The trainer always gets a great deal of the credit in any horse race, along with the jockey and, of course, the horse. But you're just being a dick, which is your M.O.

What possessed you to comment on something you obviously know nothing about?

Between the horse owners, stables, jockeys and trainers, the trainers are the ones who spend the most time with the horses getting them ready for races and advising owners which horses to buy and why, the range of how much to pay, instructing jockeys (who might be chosen for a specific race by lottery or availability) before the race, and are given most of the credit or most of the blame depending on expectations / handicap, or if anything happens to the horse between the races.

Names of winning horses are most often associated with their trainer, not with their owners or jockeys who won specific race because there are plenty of journeyman jockeys who come and go, but world class winning trainers are very few and they're very much in high demand.

Owners want well known trainers to help them find and buy horses, and then train them for a couple of years of their short racing careers, if any.

Trainers like Bob Baffert, Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, Brad Cox, Chad Brown etc. are legendary because of the winning horses they trained; most people would be hard pressed to name owners of Triple Crown event winning horses of just few years ago.

Nobody gives a damn about the owners when making bets - outside of horses' records and their pedigrees, it's mostly trainers and to a much smaller degree, the jockeys that get some weight in betting. **

watched the race 6-10 times.....I stand by my prognostication that the winner could

only get up to money.....yes I know he won but it was a classic thoroughbred race...

front runners up front setting pace from first turn through 2nd call and who will be in position

at the 3rd call ( in a route ) to pass......then figure out ( guess ) who is the one or two who

are sustained closers /. closers who will slow down the least....( they ALL SLOW DOWN ) and

pass up the tiring early speed...........Churchill Downs is a late track and on derby day

ANYTHING can happen which is why I stand by my handicapping because this weekend I can

make lobster / steak / cigar money using that same exact method.

AND WHEN IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE..........SOMETIMES....you just bet on the gray and

sit back and watch.....
